Shoot development in Tr peruvianus variegata (daily updates)
    #2936913 - 07/28/04 05:28 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

In this thread i will document the development of a new shoot on a grafted Tr. peruvianus f. variegata. These images are taken with a Nikon Coolpix 5400 on a tripod.

It should be noted that this variegated strain grows much slower the normal green varieties.

I'll do my utmost best to take a pic each day, starting yesterday. I will only edit the images for size and alignment to make it easier to see the development.

Here's a pic of the plant on the first day. A stem section of Tr. peruvianus grafted to a Myrtillocactus. This segment was grafted roughly one month ago and yesterday i noticed the first signs of growth.

And now let the fun begin....

JULY 27th

Here are the first signs of the new shoot. New spines have formed and are now visible (the small brown patch in the first photo). The new shoot is forming above the areole (below in the picture). Since the graft is is horizontal position new growth will be directed upwards.

JULY 28th

The spines have enlarged slightly

Una, finding one of your threads is always a treat. I will follow this one with great interest. I never even thought about grafting a small center section like that but it makes perfect sense.

This is looking nice! I've tried doing a graft like that before but it didn't work out. Which parts of the central ring did you overlap? Since one of them is sideways I'm wondering if the bottom end of the peruvianus ring would have to be touching the ring of the Myrtillocactus or what.

Also, do you know what the smallest section of a trichocereus you can use as a straight cutting (not graft) is? I did some experiements a year or so ago where I got a slice of pachanoi about 3cm thick and then I cut each rib part off to the core. So it was pretty much a single areole on a diamond shaped cactus section with a bit of core at the base. Planted these in some coarse sand and they ended up either shrivelling up or getting mold on them before rooting. Is it possible to do cuttings that small if you're really careful about sterility? Cause if it was then daaamn you could make a lot of babies from one mature specimen!

Older pieces can be grafted with almost any method, but the success rate usually is lower.

JULY 31st

Look there's the new shoot!

I think I figured out what Una did here. Anyone can graft a center section in the normal vertical position. It would have worked and the pups would have formed at the sides and curved upward. That wouldn't be as pretty as a horizontal graft. It's necessary to contact the vascular ring so the disc was cut in half. That means the vascular area was in contact with the host in two places. I imagine there is plenty of diffusion among the vascular tissue so the whole cutting gets nourishment. Obviously it does work... if you do it right.
