Too Much Moisture in the Jars?
    #2936808 - 07/28/04 03:02 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

I have twenty one jars that are colonizing, and about half of them are moving along just fine. The others are going more slowly, but seem to be on the way also. My question is that some of the jars that are colonizing well are getting a bunch of condensation on the insides of the jars. These are the jars from the first twelve that I innoculated. When I innoculated them first, the syringes that I used were too short and I mistakenly innoculated the dry vermiculite, so obviously nothing happened. So when I finally realized my mistake, I went ahead and re-innoculated them. The first two times I did the innoculation, I was using way too much spore solution...nearly two CC's per hole in some cases. So now, they are colonizing just fine, but are developing a bunch of moisture as I have mentioned. So I am wondering if the amount of spore solution that I used during the first two innoculations was enough to upset the balance of ingredients on the side of too much water, and if I should open the lids to let some ofthe condensation out. Any thoughts are deeply appreciated.

Shoney

Don't open the lids if they're not 100% colonized, just leave them be. By opening them you will probably introduce contams to any uncolonized substrate, especially if it's exceptionally wet substrate.

Thanks for the tips. The tape has been off of the jars for a good while now.

On another note, the second batch of jars that I innoculated, I used the standard 1/4 cc of solution, and some of those took off like gang-busters, and look as though they will overtake the first bunch that have been colonizing for a couple of weeks or so now.

Shoney,
Are your syringes really concentrated? What size jars and substrate are you using?

Condensation showing up when the myc grows is normal. If things look to slow down try turning the jars upside down. This allows the heaver co2 to get out faster and will usually pick up some myc growth speed.

The syringes I am using aren't concentrated at all. I can hardly see any spores at all. I got them from TLG. I am using a tapered 1/2 pint jar, with one part water, one part ground rice, and two parts vermiculite. I have been following the PF Tek as though it was a military manual on how to defuse a bomb...i.e...something that needs to be followed to the T...at least until I get the hang of things.

Sounds like everything is fine dude. Just wait it out. I have used as much as 3cc per jar with no ill effects. I agree that jars need to have there lids loosened up to alow air exchange. and on a personal note , once my jars get about 2/3 colinized I take the lids right off and cover them with paper towel to keep down drafts from driving contaims into the jar, the result is very fast growth.
