after two failed attempts with Shultz Vermiculite (typically found in Walmart, K-mart, etc) I went to a plant nursery and got a much finer, dark brown brand called Country Cottage and I've had success. I don't necessarily blame the failures on Verm because I'm sure Shultz is perfectly fine, but the finer stuff seems to work well at least with rice cakes.

I hear Verm is getting to be very hard to find though, so I guess you take what you can get.

i had a bitch of a time finding the small stuff. i finally scored a huge bag at a nursery that should last at least a year. i am running an experiment right now with 6 jars of big verm and 6 of the small. i just innoculated last THU and already 3 of the jars with the big verm are contammed. no problems with the small.
