gas exchange for casing
    #2936272 - 07/28/04 12:52 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I heard that casing in a terrarium has to be aired out 1-3 times every hour for proper gas exchenge. What if i won't
be able to do this every hour? I heard about cool mist humidifiers will be able to do this automatically 24/7, but I'm not
entirely sure. Is there another solution or what?
Please let me know.

U need gas exchange so u dont get cobweb. i used an inch of water with a fish bubbler and it was more than i needed. worked well. no fanning. caused a little to much humidity, but they grew none the less/

You don't need to exchange casing air 1-3 times an hour, however you will want to try and avoid allowing stagnant air to remain in your chamber for large periods of time. Hooking up some sort of cool mist with an output going into your chamber and running it on a timer will allow for some frequent air movement and exchange but you'll also have to have some "exhaust" holes for the gas to evactute from the chamber (small holes drilled at substrate level in the chamber and covered with filter discs or stuffed tight with polyfil.

Manually fanning your chamber fully 4-5 times a day works well too, just be frequent about it and you'll be fine.

you could also cut holes in your case and put filters over the holes, to allow passive airflow. you can pick up some hepa filters or else some furnace filters or something. just make sure the filters say they are good for mold spores.

pmp

3 times a hour isn't needed, but it is the right amount.

The fact that P. cubensis grow in a (nearly) sealed environment shows that they tolerate much, much less air exchange than what Stamets gives in his book.

Yep 4-5 a day is all I ever did until I got automated. Shrooms grown in high co2 will have long stems and smaller caps the yields will suffer quite a bit to but for the negect freak it's well worth it! In large grows air circulation aids in transpiration which aids in more and larger fruits. Paul is looking at it from the commercial point of view. And there is a big difference between gas exchange and fresh air exchange they two seperate issues.

Heres a pic of a friends grow that I just love
