I'd leave the tape on until the jars are roughly 50% colonized.

I'd leave it on for a few days-50% sounds OK, but no tape allows more O2, which is the key to life!

I took the tape off mine after 1 or 2 days and had full contam-free colonization in 2 weeks.. also my house is full of animals. guess maybe I'm lucky.
