I've never grown mushrooms before so this is my first attempt. I ordered a B+ syringe on the net and it came today! So far that's all that's happened (not very interesting I know) but I'll keep posting in this thread as things happen.

Since then I went to B&Q and got vermiculite

I can't really get canning jars in the UK so I got Jam :-)

I made holes in one of the lids. Is this right? How big do the holes need to be? Are they in the right place?

Looking good, are you going to get a pressure cooker? if you are i would also recommend doing a grain substrate.

I'm gonna use vermiculite and brown rice flour for my substrate. I haven't got a pressure cooker but I know someone who can sterilize it because he works in a hospital and they have to sterilize blood and shit before they throw it away. I'm also getting two dishes of substrate that they use in the labs to grow mold on. It's like agar but specially designed for fungal growth.

everything looks groovy. perfect bonne mamann holes  don't worry about your mate's hospital steriliser, though:

just put the verm in a bowl and slowly add water mixing all the time, until it starts to pool in the botom. then add the flour according to your recipe. stir it all up - hopefully there's no water at the bottom now. load jars and put foil over the top. then put them in a tall lidded saucepan of water, on a rag, the water halfway up the jar sides. bring it up to a boil, and turn it down a weeny bit so it simmers. put the lid on the pot. check it's still only simmering - you may need to turn it down a bit. let it simmer for an hour and a half if you can wait that long. allow to cool. badabing- should be sterile.

Today I poked the rest of the holes in the lids. I am gonna go down to the supermarket later and pick up some brown long grain rice, and hopefully use my girlfriend's coffe grinder to make it into flour. That might have to wait til after the weekend though.

For my terrarium I intend on using a Poor Man's Pod . Do I need to use geolite or can I do it with perlite? I can't find geolite in my area but I know where I can get hold of perlite. I've heard that it's messy though so I would preffer not to use it.

i cant find geolite anywhere either. im gonna consider using lavarocks or perlite. lavarocks sound less messy so i might wanna use them. if you use geolite(L.E.C.A - lightweight expanded clay aggregate) or lavarocks make sure to boil them for a bit before u put them in.

Also, with lava rocks you will want to rinse them thoroughly before you use them.

Ok, the events in this entry happened over 2 days.

DAY 1 - YESTERDAY
-----------------

First, I went to tesco and purchased some organic long grain brown rice.

I then put the rice into a coffe grinder.

I gorund the rice into flour by grinding, siving and regrinding the large particles.
I made 1 pint of flour.

Next, I mixed the flour with the vermiculite and water. I mixed seperately for each jar, so that I had a slight variation in the formula. I did this so that if one or two jars were wrong the rest would still survive.

I spooned the mixture into the jars.

Once I'd spooned in all of the mixture, I put the lids on the jars and tapped them to condense the mixture down a bit. This left a space at the top of each jar.

I wiped all of the mess off of the inside of each jar to help prevent contamination. I also cleaned the inside of the lid (although I forgot in a couple of them).

Next I put a dry layer of verm in each jar.

I covered the jars in foil:

And pressure cooked them to sterilize them.

I then left them to cool overnight.

DAY2 - TODAY
------------

This morning, the jars were completely cool. I got my syringe and began the innoculation procedure.
First I flame sterilized the needle.

I then proceeded to inject the spores into each of the 4 holes in each pot, allowing the needle tip to touch the side of the jars and letting the spore sollution run down the sides.
I shook the syringe and resterilized it between each jar.

I put the jars in a box and took them home. Now I just have to wait...

The jars are each a half pint. I checked the capacity using a measuring jug.
I'm not sure the capacity of the pc but it fits four jars easily.
I am going to construct a poor man's pod for a terrarium. I put a link somewhere in this thread.

How long will I have to wait to see if the spores have been innoculated properly? I'm anxious to see if I've messed it up or not. I've decided not to build a terrarium until I have some evidence that this is going to work.

If at all possible, you should try to not look at them until a week has passed. By then the growth should be substantial and you will have concurred the worst part of shroom growing, waiting.

Good luck with your grow.

Today I just got back from a week at my girlfriend's house and looked at my babies for the first time in about a week. There has been quite a lot of growth since I last looked. A couple of the jars are coming on nicely but I think I have lost 2 to contaminations. These jars had way too much water in because they were the first ones I did and I didn't judge it very well.

My Jars:

These are the ones that I think have contams:

This is probably the most developed jar:

Some more pics:

And here is my incubator (?):

Oh, and by the way, when do I take the foil off?

i say go ahead and take it off, you may see a slight increase in growth because once you remove the foil the jars get better air exchange. the dry verm layer on top will filter out any in-coming contams through the inocc. holes on the lids.

BTW looking good man time to build a PmP!

Today I went to B&Q and got some more stuff. I have started collecting resources for my fruiting chamber. I got a big plastic container with a semi transparent lid from B&Q and I got an air pump, tubing and air curtain from the pet shop.

I am hoping to get a second pump from my girlfriend as she used to have a fish tank.

I cannot find geolite/expanded clay pebbles, but I can easily get perlite. Is it ok to use prelite instead of the clay pebble things?

Also, my best jar is coming along quite nicely. Here are some pictures:

Yes, perlite will work just fine, but the clay pebbles are so much cleaner and easier to work with (not to mention they look much better if you're into looks like I am).

Contaminations? [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #2985271 - 08/10/04 09:23 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

I need some advice now. I'm not sure whether these jars have contaminations or not. They look odd, but it might just be because I put a little too much water in them. I don't know whether to
A) throw them away
B) birth them with the rest of my cakes
C) birth them somewhere else to prevent further contamination
D) Stop being paranoid

I would really appreciate it if someone could look and see whethewr they think they are contaminated.

Thank you.

Geo Lite! [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #2986007 - 08/10/04 01:08 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Today I brought some geolite from the garden centre. I came in a packet saying hydroluca. When I got back I drilled 2 holes in the side of my pod. Although I only have one air input at the moment I plan on adding a second one, hence the second hole. I fed the tube off the air pump through the hole and connected it to an airstone. I then poured the geolite over the top of it. The pod is nearly finnished.
Next I ned to get more airstones, another pump and a humidity gauge.

>>Oh and what's "B&Q"?

B&Q is a diy shop.  It sells wood and light fittings and tools ect.  It also has a gardening section with plants and vermiculite and soil and stuff like that.

:sperm:

I've decided that I'm going to get the pod up and running today and put the wet cakes in it to see what happens.  I'm hoping they will dry out a bit and fruit many mushrooms, but I doubt it somehow.  Do I need to bake the geolite first?  And do I need to rinse off the dust?

Those wet jars will just be inviting contamination into your grow chamber. If I were you,I'ld toss them.Looking at the picture,it looks like they don't have any growth... is this correct? I'm sure they have a funky smell by now too.
The others look great! Good Luck!

i'm with pinhead. they will not bring any goodness, and can only endanger the survivors.
next time, mix the jars by adding water slowly to verm and stirring until capacity reached, then add flour. this is best explained in this tek:

never mind - think what you learned already

Well today was a really eventful day. I basically finnished off my pod.

First I went down the petshop and bought another air curtain and some connectors for the tubing. When I got home I boiled up my 'hydroleca' in a big pan with a little tiny bit of bleach for good measure.

While the hydroleca was boiling I finnished off the tubes and air curtains. I fixed them to the bottom of the tank with tape, to hold it in place while I pour in the hydroleca.

Next, I had the annoying job of cooling ans training the hydroleca. I put the pan in the sink and filled it up the rest of the way with cold tap water. When it got to the top of the pan, I cleaned my washing up bowl and scooped some of the hydroleca out of the pan with a strainer. I put it in the washing up bowl and filled the bowl with cold water. By this time the hydroleca was pretty cool. I strained it again and put it in the terrarium. I then repeated with the remaining hydroleca in the pan.

I then sealled up the hinge on the lid with tape and added some finnishing touches.

Also, I decided to fruit the wet cakes today too.

They are in the fridge now cooling down to shock them into pinning.

How long do they need to stay in the fridge for?

Uhm, I really think you should reconsider fruiting those wet cakes.. They have contam written all over them. The only thing you can expect to see growing from them is a shitload of mold!

:goodluck:

Ok. I'm thinking maybe I should just get rid of them. I've already put them in though. Is it too late to take them out and avoid contamination? Would it be ok to leave the one in the jar there because most of the visible surface is colonized?

Well, re-sterilize the whole damned geo-lite like crap, hydrocela or whatever they called it... and lysol out your PMP, then boil a rag in water , let it cool so you can pick it up and wipe out your PMP.

What you mean I should resterilize it? It took me a lot more than 10 mins to do that. It took ages boiling and straining my geolite.

Jars Photographed [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #3003871 - 08/14/04 09:23 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Today I decided to label the lids of all my jars, so I can track the progress of each jar. So far I have lost 2 jars. They had too much water in them and weren't working so I burried them.

Here is jar A

One of the injections of spores haven't produced mycelium, but the other 3 sites have worked ok.

Here is jar B

This is probably the least colonized jar. Out of the 4 innoculation sites, only one of them germinated.

Here is jar C

This one's doing quite well.

Here is jar D

Half of this jar is doing ok, the other half has been really slow.

Here is Jar E

This jar is about 90% colonized. It seems to have stalled recently though.
This is it from the bottom:

Here is Jar F

This one is also doing well, with a very tiny amount of growth on the bottom of the jar.

I wouldn't bake geolite... You really need to do what I said to take the time and strain it and lysol-bleach out your PMP then wipe down w/ a boiled rag...

What's going to happen here is your going to get a good grow going, then everything will be contam'd from those stupid cakes you put in there, which will make me sad b/c I like to see first-timers do well

A through F is looking good. Those wet ones though were fucked, oh well though, it's how you learn. You probably didn't have the foil on tight enough while you PC'ed them. That'll happen. Anyways good luck it's looking good so far.

With the wet ones, I actually put to much water in to start off with, when I was mixing the substrate. I think they were the first ones I did so I wasn't very good at judging it. I'll know for next time at least. Also, I probably will resterilize my pod. I'm gonna do it just before I put the cakes in though so there's less chance of it getting fucked.

now you're thinking.

this time, after you take the trouble to sterilise the lumps, don't pour them into a dirty washing up bowl. scoop them out with a strainer, give it a couple of shakes, them dump them straight into your (freshly cleaned, as advised above) pod.

Because when they come out they are boiling hot and might melt the plastic. Also I don't want to leave the lid off so it takes ages to cool down.

Humidty Gauge Question [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #3009100 - 08/16/04 01:36 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Today my thermometer/humidity gauge came in the post. It cost a total of ?1.79 including postage.

How should I make sure this is germ free before I put it in my tank? Is it ok to just spray it with detol and wipe it with a sterile cloth?

BTW the humidity in my tank was just over 85% after it'd been on for a little while, and the temperature was just below 80.

Spraying it with detol and wiping it will be fine.

As for the tap water thing, the rocks will never be hot enough (at waters boiling point) to melt that plastic. Up to you but I don't see it happening. If they were baked or whatever maybe but since the max temp is going to be boiling point you will be fine.

Next time I highly suggest you do birdseed, for one thing getting water content is easy, just simmer the seed for about 30 and then drain for about 30 and dump in. Easy as it gets. Much easier than grinding rice and then mixing it with vermiculite.

Some people say to shake the jars but back when I used to grow, I would just load them up like I would any verm/flour, innoculate and leave them. Especially when the jars are smaller like yours.

Jars Photographed Again [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #3012590 - 08/17/04 08:55 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Her are my jars as of 17 Aug 04.

Jar A:

The strip of uncolonized material is now only about an inch wide.

Jar B:

This is the worst one. Its probably only about 1/3 colonized.

Jar C:

This jar is starting to do really well. I can see the first signs of colonization on the bottom of this jar.

Jar D:

One side of this jar is doing better than the other. Simillar to A really.

Jar E:

This is my favourite. Its doing really well, and after seeming to stall for a while it is showing more signs of growth again! There is deffinately an increase of growth on the bottom of this jar.

Jar F:

Another good one, this is also starting to show growth on the bottom.

excellent. now turn the jars upside down and watch the bottom take off. they're all over 90% now - so this is the slow boring bit. don't be tempted to do anything until several days after they're as white as a jar of rice pudding all over

i'm enjoying this log  keep it up

ADVICE NEEDED - dunking and cold shocking ect. [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #3035622 - 08/22/04 07:36 AM (20 years, 29 days ago)

Here are my babies as of 22 Aug 04. I have turned all but one of the jars upside-down. The reason that I haven't turned jar B upside down is that it is still only about 50% colonized. The dry layer of verm at the top is a bit loose, and it falls away from the uncolonized material if I try to invert it, which could leave to a contam.

Jar A:

Jar B:

This jar is actually starting to show signs of growth on the bottom.

Jar C:

Jar D:

Jar E:

(I love this one)

Jar F:

Ok, I need some advice now. I'm not 100% sure about what to do next. Should I dunk the jars before I birth them? And should I put them in the fridge for a while?

At the moment, I'm thinking of leaveing them for like 3 days after they're colonized fully. Then I will take out the dry verm, and fill the jars (with the cakes still in them) with bottled water. I will leave the jars in the fridge for 12 hours before draining the water out. Then I will put the cakes on saucers and put them in my terrarium. If there is anything wrong with this could someone please tell me before I fuck it up?

Today I am gonna re-sterilize my terrarium.

Fruited my first cake!! [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #3047603 - 08/25/04 05:49 AM (20 years, 26 days ago)

Well yesterday I fruited my first cake. I dunked it for 18 hours in the fridge, rolled it in verm and double end cased with verm. It's in my tank now. I'm not sure if I'm gonna other double end casing the rest of the cakes.

I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I will when I birth the next cake (tomorrow probably). The gay thing is, I'm going away on friday, and I'm gonna have to leave my mum looking after them at the most vital stage. She might need to birth 4 cakes and harvest and dry some shrooms.

I ordered 1.5 kilo of self indicating silica gel too for drying.

My Setup (more pics) [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #3053480 - 08/26/04 12:46 PM (20 years, 25 days ago)

Today I made the final preperations before my holiday. I finnished teaching my mum how to use the computer/webcam so she can show me my shrooms while I'm away. I also sorted out my room so all the shroomy stuff is in the same place. My room is starting to look like some kind of wierd lab.

I also made a drying chamber. This is a plastic tub with a folded piece of paper in it and a fan to blow air on it. Here is a picture with some regular mushrooms that I am testing it on.

I also got a second tub, with a smaller tub inside it. I am going to put sillica gel in the bottom of the larger tub, and mushrooms in the smaller tub after they have had 24 hours of fanning.

Lookin good ... btw, for the bottoms of jars, incubate them upside-down and smack the bottom of the jar so the stuff isn't packed against the bottom (only a newb myself, but that seemed to help the bottom colonize quicker).

^Yeah Yahoka, that'd work perfect if they weren't so wet, but I don't think it'll do much good in this case. That's a good point though.

For drying your better off just facing the fan up and resting teh shrooms on the fan or have a screen over the fan. You might run out of room with your setup.

OK. I will tell my mum to turn the fan face up and dry them out like that then, when the time comes.

And why do people keep going on about my jars being contaminated or wet? Two of my jars got too wet, and to my knowledge they had no contams. One of them is pinning now with the lid off in a freezer bag. As far as I am aware, the remaining 6 jars are all healthy.

Yesterday I spoke to my mum. We did a video chat thing and she showed me my shrooms for the first time since I arrived in Spain. She has birthed all of the cakes for me. I double end cased one of them but left the rest (to make it simple for my mum). This will help me compare the different methods and see if there is an increase in yields for the dunked, rolled and double end cased cake compared to the others.
I got her to point the webcam into the tank and there are small mushrooms growing on 2 of the cakes! My mum said there was a sudden growth over night, but now they've slowed right down. What I'm hoping will happen is theywill slow right down so that they are ready to be picked when I get back. I think it's more likely that she will have to pick some though.
Does it matter if I don't pick them straight away? Is it ok to just let them do their thing untill I get back? And when will I know when to pick them (or get my mum to pick them)?
I will be back in England in a week.

congratulations! and commiserations also on missing the birth of your firstborn

they should be picked before they spray spores everywhere. some say 'when the veil tears', but i never bother with that. being practical, you want them nice and big, but no mess to clear up!

Is she fanning the terrarium?

If it has slowed down that may be the problem (you don't want to slow them down, they just won't grow well).

This is a screenshot I took ever the webcam with my mum. She picked these today. I must say though, I have learnt something pretty major from this grow. That is to dunk, roll and DEC. I only did that on the first cake, and that cake produced 18 mushrooms. So far that other cakes have only produced 1 each. Will post more when I return to the uk in a few days. Saturday 11 is when I can do a proper update.

My regret is that I didn't start a week later. If I started a week later I could be doing this myself....

I should be seeing pins soon, and I've done everything about the same way you did. Hopefully I'll be seeing a pile like that :]

Any way your mother could weigh those so we can get an idea of how big your harvest was weight wise?

    #3117543 - 09/10/04 03:59 AM (20 years, 10 days ago)

Well today is my last day on holiday. That means that in just over 12 hours I will be back on English soil! One of the first things I'm goingto do when I get in is to photograph my tank and if necessary pick some shrooms out of it. I might not pick them straight away though, so I can eat the shrooms fresh out the tank when I decide to trip on them. Expect a big update either tonight or tomorrow morning.

Ok, I just got back and saw my babies for the first time. Tomorrow I will do a proper update with loads of pictures. I will trip tomorrow. I picked loads of shrooms today and put them in the fridge.
When I got in I thought they had all gone rotten but after a while (and much despair) I realised they had just dropped their spores everywhere. Here is a teaser picture:

Oh Yeah!! Pictures + Trip report. [Re: ihatejacknjills]
    #3123018 - 09/11/04 04:58 PM (20 years, 9 days ago)

First here is a picture my mum took on my crappy webcam. It is shit quality.

Here are various pictures of my cakes:

Here is a picture of the shrooms I picked last night:

Me and 3 freinds eat all of these and a few dried ones today.

Psilocybe Cubensis spores:

Ben:

Today we took all of those mushrooms and a few dried ones. God knows the weight. Bob took the least, and me and Will took the most. This is my second time taking shrooms, but my first wasn't as strong as this. We thought nothing had happened at first, but after a while I felt a bit 'funny'. I looked at the wall and saw visuals. The wall I was looking at was a textured artex wall, and the pattern on it started to be alive. I'm sure all of you know what I'm talking about. About 20mins after this Will started feeling it too. We sat in my room for a bit listening to infected mushroom and looking at the wall and shit. Then we decided to go out in my garden. We litterally spent about 45mins just looking at various textures to see how they moved. We eat a few more mushrooms in this period.
The main thing that I noticed was how everything had a wierd living kind of feel to it. It seemed like everything had a skin over it and there were things moving underneath it. I especially noticed this is my toilet, where the tiles loked like octopus skin or something. They seemed to pulsate with the textures moving and stretching in impossible ways. Also the floor seemed to be moving up and down slightly, and the walls were doing similar things.
One of the other great things to look at was the sky. We were lucky because there were loads of different types of clouds about today. The shrooms made them seem to be constantly reforming and swirling around. Also, looking at my had was wierd as was looking in the mirror. It was as if there were insects under my skin or something.
A while later we all found ourselves kind of coming down. I think it was more because we weren't doing anything and we let the mood drop (and turned the tunes off). At one point I got a little bit panicy and started thinking I would like it to stop, but I went inside, listened to sme trance and soon after that the effects wore up. By this time I was feeling good again, and eventually I looked at the wall and it was dead. A little while later I was at basline and eat some smoked salmon and palma ham and bread and stuff.

As we are speaking, my lovely little rice cake things are soaking in their jars. I am dunking them overnight, and tomorrow I will roll them in verm, double end case them in verm and put them back in the tank, in hope of a good second flush. I removed the verm from the cake that I already double end cased btw.

Most of the halls at Warwick university have a cleaner that comes round and does the students bedrooms. I chose one of the few that doesn't have a cleaner. This means no one will find out if I have shrooms growing under my bed (hopefully). I'm not gonna do it straight away though.

The other thing I can do is do the jars at uni, and time it so they fruit in the holidays when I'm back home.

Well the cakes have got all fluffy again after their soak, and there are 2 large pins at the moment. I have to wait now, and resist the temptations to pick early. Also I sent of for a digital scale accurate to 0.01g so I should have weights next time. I weighed the dryed shrooms I have left with an crappy balance thing I recon there is about 5.5 grams there.

If you're an experienced psychonaut I'd say eat all 5.5 at once.

If not, start with 3 and if you can handle it, eat the other 2.5!

After you do that, you should write a trip report for us on this thread.

Real good stuff, keep us updated!  (With pictures if you can  )

I got a digital scale accurate to 0.01g and I weighed the dried shrooms properly. There was 6.12g there. I have split the shrooms into 3 bags of 2g. Also I have 3 medium sized shrooms growing on the jar with a sandwich bag over the top. I will probably eat the shrooms tomorrow with my girlfriend and her dad.

How do you know such cool people? If I were to eat shrooms, I sure as hell wouldn't do it with my girlfriend's dad. He'd kick my ass.

Your mom rocks for letting you grow those in her house though. I had to wait until I moved in with some cool friends, I basically pay most of my rent in shrooms.

I know what you mean.  I just finished reading this one in its entirety for the second time.

I learn a little bit each time

I am definitely dunking, rolling and double ended casing on my next cakes.  Those photos demonstrate how important it is.

Was it only that one jar you made that turned out too wet? I was doing my second grow last night and made some of my substrate similar to that, but I don't want to throw it out. Did any jars you had like that survive?

Man I hate how I was careless and didn't stop to try and think it through for a bit and now its too late.

Sorry if the answer was in there I don't have much time right now to read through the whole log.

OK, this is the problem with the wet jars. The Mycellium can't colonize the parts of the jar that are too wet, so if you take the cake out of the jar the wet substrate is going to get contaminated easily. The only way I could really seem to get round this was to remove the top half of the cake when it was pretty colonized, and let the shrooms grow in the jar. The thing is I only got about 1 gram of dried shrooms from it so it's a bit of a waste of time.

Altogether, when dried I got about 13 grams. Sorry if I seem to have lost interest, it's because I started university.

Now I'm at uni so, sadly I can't caontinue to grow my shrooms. At least not right away.
Since I'm not living at home now, I told my mum to look after my shrooms. Yesterday she harvested the 3rd flush. 200g wet. She's gonna give them to my friends back home.

THE END

what is the reason for those shrooms looking kinda skinny? Not enough air exchange? or is it not high enough humidity? Finally whats a noob kit? wtf? NICE grow homie

I know it's been said already in the thread, but it bears repeating.
