With the wet ones, I actually put to much water in to start off with, when I was mixing the substrate. I think they were the first ones I did so I wasn't very good at judging it. I'll know for next time at least. Also, I probably will resterilize my pod. I'm gonna do it just before I put the cakes in though so there's less chance of it getting fucked.

now you're thinking.
this time, after you take the trouble to sterilise the lumps, don't pour them into a dirty washing up bowl. scoop them out with a strainer, give it a couple of shakes, them dump them straight into your (freshly cleaned, as advised above) pod.

Because when they come out they are boiling hot and might melt the plastic. Also I don't want to leave the lid off so it takes ages to cool down.

Today my thermometer/humidity gauge came in the post. It cost a total of ?1.79 including postage.
How should I make sure this is germ free before I put it in my tank? Is it ok to just spray it with detol and wipe it with a sterile cloth? BTW the humidity in my tank was just over 85% after it'd been on for a little while, and the temperature was just below 80.

Spraying it with detol and wiping it will be fine.
As for the tap water thing, the rocks will never be hot enough (at waters boiling point) to melt that plastic. Up to you but I don't see it happening. If they were baked or whatever maybe but since the max temp is going to be boiling point you will be fine.
Next time I highly suggest you do birdseed, for one thing getting water content is easy, just simmer the seed for about 30 and then drain for about 30 and dump in. Easy as it gets. Much easier than grinding rice and then mixing it with vermiculite.
Some people say to shake the jars but back when I used to grow, I would just load them up like I would any verm/flour, innoculate and leave them. Especially when the jars are smaller like yours.

Her are my jars as of 17 Aug 04.
Jar A:
The strip of uncolonized material is now only about an inch wide.
Jar B:
This is the worst one. Its probably only about 1/3 colonized.
Jar C:

This jar is starting to do really well. I can see the first signs of colonization on the bottom of this jar.
Jar D:
One side of this jar is doing better than the other. Simillar to A really.
Jar E:

This is my favourite. Its doing really well, and after seeming to stall for a while it is showing more signs of growth again! There is deffinately an increase of growth on the bottom of this jar.
Jar F:

Another good one, this is also starting to show growth on the bottom.

excellent. now turn the jars upside down and watch the bottom take off. they're all over 90% now - so this is the slow boring bit. don't be tempted to do anything until several days after they're as white as a jar of rice pudding all over
i'm enjoying this log keep it up

ADVICE NEEDED - dunking and cold shocking ect. [Re: ihatejacknjills]

Here are my babies as of 22 Aug 04. I have turned all but one of the jars upside-down. The reason that I haven't turned jar B upside down is that it is still only about 50% colonized. The dry layer of verm at the top is a bit loose, and it falls away from the uncolonized material if I try to invert it, which could leave to a contam.
Jar A:

Jar B:

This jar is actually starting to show signs of growth on the bottom.
Jar C:

Jar D:

Jar E:
 (I love this one)
Jar F:

Ok, I need some advice now. I'm not 100% sure about what to do next. Should I dunk the jars before I birth them? And should I put them in the fridge for a while?
At the moment, I'm thinking of leaveing them for like 3 days after they're colonized fully. Then I will take out the dry verm, and fill the jars (with the cakes still in them) with bottled water. I will leave the jars in the fridge for 12 hours before draining the water out. Then I will put the cakes on saucers and put them in my terrarium. If there is anything wrong with this could someone please tell me before I fuck it up?
Today I am gonna re-sterilize my terrarium.

Well yesterday I fruited my first cake. I dunked it for 18 hours in the fridge, rolled it in verm and double end cased with verm. It's in my tank now. I'm not sure if I'm gonna other double end casing the rest of the cakes.
I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I will when I birth the next cake (tomorrow probably). The gay thing is, I'm going away on friday, and I'm gonna have to leave my mum looking after them at the most vital stage. She might need to birth 4 cakes and harvest and dry some shrooms.
I ordered 1.5 kilo of self indicating silica gel too for drying.
