I've never grown mushrooms before so this is my first attempt. I ordered a B+ syringe on the net and it came today! So far that's all that's happened (not very interesting I know) but I'll keep posting in this thread as things happen.

You're right. That's not very interesting.
But your enthusiasm is well understood. Go knock up some jars!

Since then I went to B&Q and got vermiculite

I can't really get canning jars in the UK so I got Jam :-)

I made holes in one of the lids. Is this right? How big do the holes need to be? Are they in the right place?

Looking good, are you going to get a pressure cooker? if you are i would also recommend doing a grain substrate.

I'm gonna use vermiculite and brown rice flour for my substrate. I haven't got a pressure cooker but I know someone who can sterilize it because he works in a hospital and they have to sterilize blood and shit before they throw it away. I'm also getting two dishes of substrate that they use in the labs to grow mold on. It's like agar but specially designed for fungal growth.

everything looks groovy. perfect bonne mamann holes don't worry about your mate's hospital steriliser, though: just put the verm in a bowl and slowly add water mixing all the time, until it starts to pool in the botom. then add the flour according to your recipe. stir it all up - hopefully there's no water at the bottom now. load jars and put foil over the top. then put them in a tall lidded saucepan of water, on a rag, the water halfway up the jar sides. bring it up to a boil, and turn it down a weeny bit so it simmers. put the lid on the pot. check it's still only simmering - you may need to turn it down a bit. let it simmer for an hour and a half if you can wait that long. allow to cool. badabing- should be sterile.

Today I poked the rest of the holes in the lids. I am gonna go down to the supermarket later and pick up some brown long grain rice, and hopefully use my girlfriend's coffe grinder to make it into flour. That might have to wait til after the weekend though.
For my terrarium I intend on using a Poor Man's Pod . Do I need to use geolite or can I do it with perlite? I can't find geolite in my area but I know where I can get hold of perlite. I've heard that it's messy though so I would preffer not to use it.

i cant find geolite anywhere either. im gonna consider using lavarocks or perlite. lavarocks sound less messy so i might wanna use them. if you use geolite(L.E.C.A - lightweight expanded clay aggregate) or lavarocks make sure to boil them for a bit before u put them in.

Also, with lava rocks you will want to rinse them thoroughly before you use them.

Ok, the events in this entry happened over 2 days.
DAY 1 - YESTERDAY -----------------
First, I went to tesco and purchased some organic long grain brown rice.

I then put the rice into a coffe grinder.
I gorund the rice into flour by grinding, siving and regrinding the large particles. I made 1 pint of flour.

Next, I mixed the flour with the vermiculite and water. I mixed seperately for each jar, so that I had a slight variation in the formula. I did this so that if one or two jars were wrong the rest would still survive.
I spooned the mixture into the jars.
Once I'd spooned in all of the mixture, I put the lids on the jars and tapped them to condense the mixture down a bit. This left a space at the top of each jar.
I wiped all of the mess off of the inside of each jar to help prevent contamination. I also cleaned the inside of the lid (although I forgot in a couple of them).
Next I put a dry layer of verm in each jar.
I covered the jars in foil:
And pressure cooked them to sterilize them.
I then left them to cool overnight.
DAY2 - TODAY ------------
This morning, the jars were completely cool. I got my syringe and began the innoculation procedure. First I flame sterilized the needle.
I then proceeded to inject the spores into each of the 4 holes in each pot, allowing the needle tip to touch the side of the jars and letting the spore sollution run down the sides. I shook the syringe and resterilized it between each jar.
I put the jars in a box and took them home. Now I just have to wait...
