Off what does Mycelium Feed?
    #2934335 - 07/27/04 11:08 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I was wondering, What compounds or chemicals in particular does Mycelium feed off of? I am planning to try a whole bunch of weird Stuff for substrate once i have the spores to spare, just for fun. Do they feed off Proteins / fats / carbohydrates / sugars / glucose /fructose ? anything like that? cause i know Marijuana plants at different stages require different amounts of nitrogen or phosphorus and other minor nutrients.

All of the above as far as I know. Try out some stuff and tell us what works best! Just keep in mind to use a substrate that holds in enough moisture. I bet you could get it to grow on just about anything if you used enough vermiculite (assuming what you used had at least SOME nutrients/fats)

Let's say you decide to use a growth medium such as brown rice. This is a popular choice amongst home cultivators. P. cube thrives on brown rice, where as if you were to use another rice such as white rice, the fungus would struggle to survive.

So now you have to compare the two rices, which are relativly similar, and look for nutritional value differences. Then you could pick out what the fungus is actually utilizing in the brown rice that it's not obtaining with the white rice.

We'll compare the nutritional values of one cup of brown rice flour (BRF) to one cup of white rice flour (WRF)

Nutritional Element: BRF, WRF
Calories: 232, 223
Protein: 4.88 g, 4.10 g
Carbohydrates: 49.7 g, 48.6 g
Fat: 1.17 g, 0.205 g
Fiber: 3.32 g, 0.74 g
Thiamin: 0.176 mg, 0.223 mg
Riboflavin: 0.039 mg, 0.021 mg
Niacin: 2.730 mg, 2.050 mg
Vitamin B6: 0.294 mg, 0.103 mg
Folaci: 10 mcg, 4.1 mcg
Vitamin E: 1.4 mg, 0.462 mg
Magnesium: 72.2 mg, 22.6 mg
Phosphorus: 142 mg, 57.4 mg
Potassium: 137 mg, 57.4 mg
Selenium: 26 mg, 19 mg
Zinc: 1.05 mg, 0.841 mg

As you can see, BRF has many nutritional values that are richer then that of WRF. The fat and fiber content are significantly higher. The trace element count are also much higher in BRF, significanly that of magnesium, phosphorus and potassium.

My guess is that the trace minerals and vitamins are arbutrary to the growth of the fungus, meaning that it would probably thrive with or without them. I see the fat and the fiber being the key route to growth and development. But I can't really rule out that magnesium, phosphorus and potassium play a key role in growth. To determine that type of factor you would have to compare two different sucessful substrates, like BRF and corn kernals and see if there are significant differences in the amounts of minerals and vitamins.

Hope that helps.

Very very well said, But since mycelium seems to be able to grow (at least somewhat) on almost anything, is there anything that we know for a fact it WON'T grow on? And yes i know the obvious ones, like rocks, and fire.

I think it will grow on anything that contains an ample amount of moisture. But growth needs to be sustained with the proper nutrients. You could have fungus from the same mycelium growing over many different substrates at the same time, as long as just one of the substrates contained the proper nutrients and another proper water supply. This is how casings work. Hyphae from the main-stay mycelium will reach down and sustain new growth in the non-nutrient moisture layer and thrive as long as the connection between the nutrient layer is intact. The mycelium that has colonized the nutrient layer will draw moisture from the non-nutrient moist region, and vice-versa.
