Question about mushrooms turning blue
    #2933766 - 07/27/04 06:02 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Yesterday some new shrooms started to grow on my cakes, they looked fine. Now today, they have turned blue. What is happening here? Should I pick these mushrooms and throw them out? What does it mean when shrooms turn blue before the cap has detached from the stem?

from what i've read a zillion times on here, it's bruising and it's perfectly normal.

the blue you are seing is caused by oxidation and is perfectly normal. Amature shroom users will concur that blue shrooms mean they are better, this is false however any shroom could be blued simply be abusing it to cause brusing or cutting a slit in it allowing it to oxidise <(spelling?). But as far as your question goes, let them be they are perfectly safe. Happy growing bra.

Thanks. And yes I am aware that blue is usually due to bruising, but i have no touched these shrooms, and this happened over the duration of an hour in two seperate terraniums. The oxidation idea sounds more like it. Can mushrooms oxidize in an hours time? And what exactly causes them to oxidize in such a way?

The same thing is happening to me right now. Yes, they can turn blue (bruise) with-in an hour but I'm not completly sure what causes this.

In addition to rough handling, bruising can also be caused by direct misting, low RH, and general dryness.

Edit: Nice 3 year old thread resurrection.

Yeah a resurection, but its kinda relevent.

On other not about bruised mushrooms, while it may be of some indication of being active, some of the most potent mushroms have shown no bruising. Which makes sense since bruising is oxidisation of the active chemicals, once they oxidise they are now a different chemical.
