Diodorus of Sicily's World History places the Amazons at the Thermodon River and endows one of them, known as the Daughter of Ares, with some distasteful traits. Not content with subduing her neighbors and making almost constant - if successful - war, she established laws which turned the tribe's men into humiliated slaves. Worse, any male children had their arms and legs mutilated so they would be unfit for battle... as well as rebellion.

Depends... not all native indians kept slaves, but during certain periods, some did... (I don't know that I can find sources for this anymore, but from what I remember, the practice was introduced by indians which came up from central/south america... they also introduced cannibalism into the native american indian culture for a short period of time.)

It was not uncommon for tribal peoples to enslave rival tribesmen and women. Native americans did.

Did the aborigines or the eskimos keep slaves though? Where are you going with this or is it just idle curiosity?!

Depends what you mean by "slavery" too. Certain native american tribes taking war captives as slaves isn't quite the same thing as shipping them over from Africa to use as cheap labour to boost a few rich peoples profits.

I'm sure that made the domestic slaves feel MUCH better.
Well, my slavemaster whipped me to within an inch of my life today but hey.... at least I'm from here to begin with!
Holy crap. What a moronic statement that was PinochhiAl.

The only difference I see between the two is the distances involved?
War captives used as cheap labour for the profit of the winning tribe... Captives used as cheap labour for the profit of the rich plantations...
Slavery is slavery... I don't think you can make slavery 'good' just by changing the circumstances...

I think Alex is using this as a starting point to justify slavery to the state.
-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Mostly curiosity but I hate it that many people act like white Americans were the only people to ever have slaves. If we have to pay reporations should they then pay for the slaves that thier people probably had? Should Islam pay for the Black slaves that they kept?

No no no. It's only Americans that should pay.

Sorry, some American Indian tribes kept slaves that they bought from the white man, and most of them kept slaves taken during war with other tribes.
