Korn- I liked their first two albums when I was like 16, but I never listen to that shit anymore. I guess I grew out of it. Plus, when Korn came out with that 'Got the Life' video, where they are blowing up ferraris and shit, I kind of got disillusioned with the band. Its hard to take their first couple albums seriously anymore considering the fact that they have sold out so hardcore.

Limp Bizkit- Same as Korn, really. I liked their old shit but I never listen to it anymore. I do still have very vivid memories of being in the massive stage rush which occured right when LB took the stage at the first Family Values tour. Good times. But really, I think what killed my feelings for the band was Fred Durst's media personality. He overexposed himself and I got tired of him; he's kind of annoying and egotistical.

Linkin Park- Wow, I really hated these guys when they came out. I guess I was just going with the crowd of macho assholes who refuse to admit they listen to shit like that. Also, I was skeptical of the band's intentions and talent. But all that changed when I saw them live. Linkin Park puts on a fucking badass show, every one of them is a good musician, and they all play with passion. I especially like the vocalist, I think he is really talented because he can sing smooth and then do the death metal scream on pitch which any vocalist knows is very difficult. Before I saw them live, I pictured them as a contrived studio band, but I was pleasantly surprised at their ability to reproduce the records live with great accuracy. I find a lot of meaning and emotion in their songs, especially: "Numb", "Lying Away From You", "Crawling", and "In the End". Sometimes I even detune my guitar so I can play their songs myself.

He can't change on pitch you fool. The lyrics were dumped into a computer and arranged that way.

Anyways.....Tool is awesome imo. Not overrated, but rated at the right level for such a band. If you think about it, many rock bands become overrated a lot faster than Tool has in the last 12 years.

Danny is a awesome drummer imo. Probably very close to the top of the list for best drummers, but it's all opinion when it comes down to it I suppose.

Hey, anybody know of a good place I can score some free food? I used to steal it from the corner market but stopped because of all that shit with the owner getting pissed and chasing me down the street with a shotgun. (fuckin jerk, i'll never pay for food, tee hee)

Also, does anybody know of a good place to get some free gas? I just drove off a few times from the pump but then stopped cause of those stupid video cameras they have. (assholes, why should I pay for gas?? hehehehehe)

Hey, I was wondering too if there was a way I could maybe get some free drugs, maybe some women who'll sleep with me for free without moral obligation, maybe some free clothes off someone else's back, hell why doesn't everyone who reads this just send me some of the shit they worked hard to earn and create even though I've done nothing to deserve it and probably wouldn't even appreciate it considering that my taste is piss poor and there isn't even a trace of an advanced consciousness or thoughtfulness anywhere in my monkey thief skull?

Haha, thanks guys.

Dude, please. Of all those drummers you listed, not even the most skilled of them can match Danny Carey's hi hat work, his artful and sensitive ride patterns and cymbal work, the way he executes heavily syncopated yet perfectly placed transition fills, the type of thing you'd hear in the song "Jimmy" for instance. He knows when not to drop an accent. He has the ability to groove an intensely deep pocket even in really odd time, like the build to the climax in "The Patient" for instance not to mention his seamless use of triggered samples in his grooves in something like Eulogy or the transition in Pushit that he can do live and sound like a whole ensemble of voodoo percusionists or tabla players in a mystical rhythm trance.

None of those drummers you listed can lay down a tribal groove like Carey on the entire kit with a deep backbeat. All they're doing most of the time is throwing down a lot of double bass, slamming on an open hi hat and playing weird accents on the snare. All those metal drummers you listed can't even play a thoughtful or usefull fill or do decent cymbal work in slow tempos. They just don't even have an inkling of the sensitivity of Carey. Meshugga's drummer Haike or whatever is interesting but again, he's just pretty brutal and not really sensitive or delicate at any time. Mike Portnoy? Give me a break dude, that guy's playing is like the musical equivalent to a dick measuring contest. Who fucking cares? Virgil Donatti? Why do you think he puts out all those solo records? The guy doen't know how to listen or compliment what other people are doing. Technical ability doesn't mean shit if you can't use it in a musical context. Carey has unreal technical ability, and power and endurance like any of those other clowns, but the most important thing is his sensitivity. He understands the concept of dynamics. It's not that "he can 'play in crazy time sigs'" that makes him good as that dipshit who wrote the Tool bashing article so cleverly quipped. He can groove in any time. When he plays an odd time you can tell he really gets into the part until he's at home in it. Every part of his kit is contributing to that groove. He doesn't just play the snare in odd time while flailing at an open hat or cymbal like most fuckin metal drummers. He cares about creating a thoughtful drum part that compliments the music happening around him.

Of course it's largely a matter of opinion, but not entirely. To say that Danny "couldn't even hold a candle to the competition" of so many other drummers that you've heard is just plain rediculous. Few drummers' playing can match the complexity and depth of Carey's parts while still being worth a damn musically. If you say the drummer from Opeth is better, sorry but your opinion is wrong. I've never heard that guy do a ride pattern other than straight eigths or sixteenths. I don't even think he knows there's a pedal on his hi-hat, and with guys like that, if they're not slammin straight ahead with double kick they usually seem to lose any real command of a part and the playing just sounds more like a backround track. I checked out Atma Anur and he's good. But he's nowhere near drumming circles around Carey. Dillinger's drummer is really fucking incredible but his thing is all out freak out insanity type shit. He's not really comfortable just grooving something or playing with sensitivty. Carey can do both masterfully.

I don't care if you think Tool's music isn't worth a damn. I just won't let you get away with saying that Danny Carey "can't even hold a candle" to a bunch of fucksticks. Not that I'd expect you to really know what you're talking about as far as drummers are concerned since you're a guitar player. Stick to talkin shit about what you know.

People that like hearing talented musicians show off their skills and play complex, technical music maybe?  I find it hard to hold the fact that he's very good and plays in bands/projects where he can show it against him, sorry .

Yeah, indeed, wouldn't be because he pulls off shit most drummers can't or anything...  I'm sure he would have a lot of trouble playing something simpler for a band to jam along with, he definitely can't be as good as anyone playing for a whole 4 piece rock band, which we all know is the epitome of musical innovation and skill :rotfl:...

Ahh, I see, I didn't know it was necessary to be a drummer to be able to think one drummer is more skilled than another, my mistake.  Maybe saying Lopez is better was a stretch, I just prefer his style.  Thanks for letting me know that my opinion is in fact the 'wrong' one though, I guess my ears are just lying to me, damn things.  In light of this news, I hereby concede that tool is the greatest band to ever exist and that Danny Carey is the best drummer in all of prog/metal because he is grooving and sensitive, whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean.

Regarding Mike "The Masturbator" Portnoy:

Quote:

I find it hard to hold the fact that he's very good and plays in bands/projects where he can show it against him, sorry .

I don't hold the fact that he has technical ability against him.  I just don't think he has any taste.

Regarding Virgil "solo album" Donatti:

Quote:

I'm sure he would have a lot of trouble playing something simpler for a band to jam along with, he definitely can't be as good as anyone playing for a whole 4 piece rock band, which we all know is the epitome of musical innovation and skill ...

It's a lot more of a challenging task, musically, to play in a consistent band.  And as if the fact that Tool is only a "whole four piece" band makes it laughable or something.  Actually, the smaller of a band you're in, the larger task it is for a drummer.  That's why a lot of power trios have drummers that shine, they have to, like Stewart COpeland, Tim Alexander and Neil Peart.  Being in a one-piece doesn't count though .
and what would you rather listen to, a drummer working with a band or a drummer playing off of soulless programmed riffage and sampled crap like you hear on Donatti's solo drum albums?

Quote:

Thanks for letting me know that my opinion is in fact the 'wrong' one though

I was only messin around.  I just think it's incredibly funny to say that someone's opinion is wrong, it's just so rediculous.
However, your opinion in this matter, as you so graciously admitted, was in fact  wrong . :smirk:

Quote:

I hereby concede that ... Danny Carey is the best drummer in all of prog/metal because he is grooving and sensitive, whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean.

Amen, brother!  Come on, you know, like a fine wine or spending special time with a lady friend.

And i have a love hate feeling about Linkin Park. They're pop. They rely on melodies, they're not doing anything that hasn't been done and redone again and again. Not amazing song writers by any means, and not amazing musicians. But for some reason, they appeal to me. I particularly liked their Re-animation album quite well.

Korn i've always loved, and still do, though i definately think the last 3 albums are way under par..

And as for Tool, no one really compares except maybe other prog rock groups... Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, etc...

I'd check out this Aussie rock band Priory here:
www.mp3.com.au/Priory

If nu-metal is your thing I would suggest getting to know some of these acts as well:
Mindless Self Indulgence
Faith No More
Anthrax
Biohazard
Murderdolls
System of a Down
Otep <--- a really recommend their "Sevas Tra" album
Dog Fashion Disco
Opeth (especially Bleak)
Meshugga
Machine head
Chaimera
Marilyn Manson
Machines of Loving Grace
Genitorturers
Slayer "Reign of Blood"
KMFDM
Sepultura
Soulfly
Mushroom Head

Cradle of Filth and Mudvayne are co-headlining a tour soon. That should be worth checking out.

Korn's next album is supposed to be their last major label album (they're going indie).. and it's nothing but cover songs. They cover NIN's Head Like a Hole with Chester from LP, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and Public Enemy's "Fight the power" with Lil Jon. Should be interesting...could be horrible too.
