Yeah he's been in and out of rehab. I guess I just remember them coming out with a new album after him supposedly cleaning up, and it really sucked. I think towards the end though, he was just a heroin junkie. Not a very productive substance. Whatever the case, something happened that caused them to start sucking really bad.

I don't know if this has been posted here and I know you hardcore tool fans will hate it, but it's funny as hell and makes some good points . Tool is a decent band, but they are waaaaay over rated IMO. Not too bad considering the current crop of mainstream US rock/metal bands, I can actually stand listening to them for a while and will concede that they do have some talent, but I can't help but laugh when people proclaim them to be things like 'the most advanced band ever' . Not that this will change anyone's opinion, but I thought it was relevant eh.

I think that guys just mad because he can't get into the music as much as others. "A lot of Tool fans also like to talk about what an amazing drummer Danny Carey is just because he can do weird time signatures and that really fast prog-rock thumpa thumpa thumpa thing" thats just BS, sure he does those things, but you can't deny he is a VERY incredible drummer. Ya alot of the fans are dicks and proclaim maynard god, i think thats stupid. I don't know what it is, but I can connect with their music more than any other band i've heard. I can't believe he says 46 & 2 is a catchy pop single. What a dick. He also says we think tool is a band for smart people. I don't think i'm smart. I'm a drop out, worethless waste of a human. I know lots of not "smart" people who like tool. And it's only the idiot maynard is god fans, who give him grounds to say that shit. Im curious, what kind of music or bands does this shmuck listen to.

well, I don't see why he would be mad about 'not being able to get into the music', though I see how it's easier to discredit what he wrote if you actually believe that . Is it such a stretch to think that he honestly dislikes the music? Or is tool just too great to not like ? it was just an opinion essay, meant mostly to piss rabid tool fans off. I think the mention of intelligence was mostly for that reason, I think it's obvious there's no correllation between what bands you listen to and how smart you are to the author and anyone else. As for carey, he's decent, I wouldn't say incredible (overrated is more accurate), I've heard a good number of drummers I would say are better (outside of jazz/fusion/prog etc., where he really wouldn't even hold a candle to the competition). I'm not trying to say tool is total and utter garbage or anyone should stop listening to them, just that the constant deification of them by fans on these boards and others borders on self-parody. That being said, you're of course free to listen and do as you please . Carry on. DH

well, I'm a guitarist, so I'm not too big on drummers anyway, and when you're talking about good musicians there will of course be disagreements. here's a short list of drummers I think are better off the top of my head though (in no particular order) Virgil Donati Martin Lopez Mike Portnoy Mark Hinneman Atma Anur dude from meshuggah dude from dillinger EP Carey is a good drummer and perfect for tool, but if you search, I guarantee you will hear drummers that blow him away IYO as well, his work is not as 'incredible' music-wise as many tool fans seem to think. Getting them to accept that isn't the easiest thing ever, but if you get into listening to really good drummers, you will find it to be true. sorry for derailing the thread, I'll stop now I will just say that for all the shit I dislike about tool, I still like them better than the bands in the original topic DH

I'm sorry but PORTNOY is way over rated. He might be able to double bass drum real fast but hes very boring to listen to. I think Danny Carrey is way better because he doesnt do overkill with the drumming. But he makes sure to do some amazing fills and play some very odd and hard drum beats. He is definatley one of the best drummers out there.

I agree with you that music is dieing and about those bands have no real feeling or emotion, exept korn. Either you haven't heard enough of their stuff or have really "listened" to them. Their music is full of emotion and meaning. Give them another listen, you'll see.
