I agree although I'm not sure how this fits into S&P.

Morrison was much better earlier on in his career when he was using lsd frequently. Later he became a sad alcoholic. I hate it when people use him as an example of what happens when people use drugs. Alcohol destroyed Jim Morrison, not drugs.

I personally find the Doors fascinating... both in their unique insturmentalism, and in Morrison's poetry and insights. It's worth noting though, that as much as people love them around here, that the sort of philosophy in his songs is completely opposite to what a lot of people here preach... plenty of death, evil, depravity... "heartbreak and the loss of god" etc. Personally this endears it to me more, because denying these things doesn't mean that they don't exist, and confronting them can give you power over them.

It also has many more complex implications, what with the Dionysian stuff, which I might get into in another post aftre I get some sleep

The Doors are one of my all-time favorite bands, even though I listen to alternative mainly.

A late friend of mine hung around with Morrison a bit when they were at Florida State together (Morrison in film school). All I got from questions was that Jim had a really messy dorm room. That's all, very disappointing, and now my friend has been dead for 4 years.

When my family took us to Miami in 1968, April, we stayed at a brand new hotel - the Marco Polo. I remember the poster that said that The Doors were going to play in the hotel's lounge - a lounge!!! Unfortunately, the engagement was After we were to leave for NJ the following week. That tour is when Morrison got busted on Rickenbacker Key for obscene exposure. Then, the following year, someone offered me a ticket to a NY engagement, but I had just seen Cream at Madison Square Garden so I declined 'cause I wasn't in the mood for another show - figured they'd be around again. So, July 3rd, 1971 Jim died. I had just finished high school and later that year in college, I heard Other Faces play - The Doors minus Morrison. They did not last long, suffice to say.

Ray Manzarek sometimes plays in small places up in Ft. Lauderdale. I know people who have gone to see him. I'll keep an eye out for him one of these days, maybe I could have a chat with him, even invite him to dinner. Why not?

I usually listen to The Doors at night, after some alcohol, especially when feeling nostalgic. Jim's poetry is problematic for me philosophically. It is understandable why he was likened to Dionysius in his intoxication, excess, female worshippers and his madness. He had a dark streak that fought against the Light called Christ, and his decent into unconsciouness and death reflects his morph from Dionysius to Hades (god of the underworld). The music still holds some beauty, dark though it may be, in its aspect of the god Eros (god of sexuality), but not in its aspect of Thanatos (god of death).

The Doors are over-rated, IMHO. Jim was an egotistical bastard that was not any more insightful than his contemporaries.

Ok, let me explain it via my understanding
I have a very artistic mind, and when I listen to music or watch a movie or read poetry, I see a sort of secondary interpretation image in my head.

The Doors are the band who can create the most vivid and meaningful imagery for me.

How does he do it? Damned if I know, he did it, not me.

*applauds Morrowind *

For sho! i know exactly what you mean. Sometimes i may not be in the mood for the doors and would rather listen to something else, but to me i think that their music is probably the most artistic there is.

That's cause that is pretty much all he was. Not saying that he didn't write a few brilliant songs, there was much bigger things going on in his time though. That and the musicains in the band were nothing special, oh yeah and his enormous drug problem wasn't very impressive.

Just a drunken egomaniac.

I'll give him points for being slightly ahead of his time in terms of his rockstar I-love-death behavior, but I don't think he really had anything vital to say.

And Oliver Stone did do a good job of trying to make him look important.
