Realy give u the proper info, the 1 i bought mentioned NOTHING at all about putting the container with substrate in the dark at all, just simply said to put in terranium, put under window spray with 110ml spring water and her presto a week or 2 later...mushrooms!!
after reading what i read today (and i know whos views i trust) im quite certain this WONT work cos light which the book says to be applied STRAIGHT AWAY is what triggers the substrate to fruit, clearly tho this is wrong........any1 help me out??

i am in scunthorpe mate, gotten a hawaiin cubensis kit, basically just a small plastic container with substrate + vermiculite in it bud - got it from gizmos-ok.co.uk

well i don't know where scunthorpe is, sorry. but assuming it's legal for you to use that grow kit you have then all you need to do is innoculate it and put it in a dark place until it is almost fully colonized and then introduce to light (all this time keeping temps very near 86 deg. F.). as for spraying with water...... i was under the impression that grow kits were automated needing nothing but spore introduction.

yeah it is legal to use here m8 i cheked. the instructions say simply to put in terranium, mist with water, covering top with clingfilm & piercing top with several holes and put under a window, no mention of puttin anywhere in a dark place until mycellium at all mate...

The peeps putting out these kits are more concerned with keeping it simple. they are not concerned about yields thats the bottom line. Here is where you learn the fine art of mycology Kev! GL

It's not important to grow the mycelia in the dark. All my jars colonized and grew in the light for years without any problems ever.

Not good advice bro! The myc may not need darkness to grow but it sure as hell helps as far as triggering awesome flushes when light IS introduced!!! For years eh? Sorry not disrespect meant but you missed sometime important years ago bro. Hey as long as your happy with your yields thats all that really matters right?

Myth.
I grew for years with some jars in the light, some in dark boxes. You wouldn't be able to figure out which were which once they made it into a terrarium for fruiting. The fresh O2, humidity, and drop of temps work dandy to get a great pin set.
Plus this guy isn't trying to supersize his yield on bulk grains, he's trying to get his first grow to work. Keeping the mycelia dark won't assist him in that, and pretending it is a big deal does him a disservice by making him focus on unimportant issues.

thats right.... his FIRST grow.i don't know about you but when i did my first i was a bit impatient. one cure for a lack of patience is to put ur stuff in the dark till it's 100% colonized (cut's the col. time down dramatically) IMO!

Impatient on just the first grow? Jeez I get impatient every time!
My first grow I innoculated 8 PF jars, put a desk lamp on them to keep em warm, and left for Christmas vacation for 4 weeks. They had fruited in the jars and we had fun fun fun the night we got back into town.
Do an experiment. See if colonization times are identical between the jars in the light, and those in the dark. I have done just that, and absolutely no difference, at least with PF style jars.
