Input on outdoor bucket contam

Okay, first off, this friend of mine was doing kind of an experiment. He had two pints of colonized rye. He went to his compost pile, dug into the center, got some good compost. He took this compost and filled a gallon bucket halfway, dumped in a pint of colonized rye, put a layer of compost down, put in the other pint of rye, and another layer of compost.
He sprayed a little 10% h202 on top, covered with plastic wrap, and set it outside. The myc started to colonize over the course of a week. But then a little green stuff appeared in the middle. He could see the myc was growing toward the top, though. Two days ago he took the plastic wrap off, and it has been sitting in the shade. Today, he checked it and there was MORE green stuff, and what looked like some cobweb, too. This may have just been wispy myc, though. He wasn't sure. He wishes his dumb ass would have bought more batteries for his fucking digital camera so he could post a pic.
Anyway, so today he said, "Fuck it," and made up 25% or so h202 and sprayed the contams. They sort of liquified and bubbled from the peroxide.
My friend wants to know: 1) Did the contams likely come because he covered it airtight for a few days? He was under the impression outside grows were easier to keep contam-free. 2) Anyone used this heavy of an h202 spray before? And 3) Had he pasteurized the compost, would this have helped prevent contams, even if it was outside?
The odd thing is he has a little rubbermaid jar that he put about 1/4 cup of compost and literally a dozen rye berries with myc that were from the bottom of his jars. This is still colonizing and is, as of today, still looking okay.
Well, sorry this is long. Anyone care to comment, have similar experience? Thanks very much, my bud will greatly appreciate any insight.

No, i don't think so, although i have to say it helps a bit ....

Yes. Sometimes it works.

Most probably, yes.
