Okay cool, I am using the verm to case jars that are already colonized at the moment but I will be using it in the future in substrate so that is good to know. Think I could leave the rice grain whole to keep the substrate a bit coarser? With the honey method you just mentioned I would leave a few CCs in the syringe than just suck in the cooled honey water? I only have jars with metal lids.. while on the one hand it would be interesting to microwave them with the lid it would probably be a bad idea ;P How else could I sterilize the honey water? Also how long will syringes made like this last? thx

Hmm... I dunno about the whole rice grain, i have no experience there
Yea you leave a few CCs in each syringe
I've sterilized several in the microwave like this no prob
in fact i'm doing one right now...gets kinda messy if it spurts out but this is remedied by putting the jar on a plate and putting tupperware container over the jar.
I have had the rubber on the lids melt to the glass of the jar, but a wee bit of prying will get them off, not a big deal besides you're not gonna need to remove the lids until you decide to toss your jars

If you wanna you could pressure cook them...maybe...probably risk caramelizing the honey though
I'd stick with the microwave

The honey syringe is an adaptation LiquidGaia told me about.
We've both had success with it

Are you serious that you do, in fact, microwave a metal container? Thanks, but no thanks...

Suit yourself. I haven't had any problems with it, and besides its only the lid that's metal

metal in a microwave can actually catch on fire..metal absorbs microwaves..I'm just saying that it is Darwin material, and I don't feel like being the weakest link....goodbye!

Heh heh hatter.. I once went to heat up a pizza slice on a plate that had hair-thin gold leaf trim around the edge, after a few second it was crackling like mad, there was 'lightening' firing all over inside! moral: don't microwave metal! KaoServitor that is an interesting honey water tek, it's the first I've heard of it. How long do you estimate these syringes would last? You could just keep using this tek repreatedly with the same syringe, leaving a few CCs of solution each time you innoculate (contams would get you eventually but I image you could get a pretty good run). Good info! Also I have narrowed down to Hawiian and PF, which would be recommended for beginner using BRF+vem than casing? Thx!
