Orange Contam?
    #2929642 - 07/26/04 08:09 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Hi, My husband and I are brand new to growing, so first, I'd like to introduce us.
I think we may have a contamination, but I'm not sure. I can't seem to find anything on this site that pertains to what I'm seeing in this jar. (We're just working with the PF TEK right now.)I read that if water touches the mycelium, it can turn yellowish. We innoculated 4 1/2 pint jars. In two of them, a couple days after we could see the mycelium, we started to notice a little bit of yellow towards the middle of it. There was a tiny bit of visible moisture where it was yellowed, so we figured that was why it went a little yellowish. Over the past couple days though, the yellow has gone to a light orange and there are a few tiny red specks. It doesn't smell like anything. The picture makes it look a bit darker than it really is though. If anyone can help us out, we'd really appreciate it.

The pics also aren't as detailed as I'd like. Sorry.

You can tell that it's very much contaminated because of how there is an inner circle of white surrounded by all that nbasty yellow and pink stuff. You can tell how the mycelium (inner circle) is trying to colonize but it is completely surrounded by contamination. That happened to 60 percent of my last batch of jars...I think it had something to do with the syringe being contaminated between inoculation.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your replies. We have two other jars from a different syringe that seem to be doing great, so hopefully they'll stay that way.

It might be rust from the lid! I had some that looked like that, and the turned out fine! The rust just stained the Myc.

There's no rust to be found on the lids. When we throw them outside, should we put the whole thing out there, or just the mycelium that doesn't have colors on it? In the one jar, there's only coloring at two of the injection sites. The other two are white, and seem to be doing good.
Also, as far as putting them outside- I read a tek that used manure and hay. I was just wondering if anyone knew if manure and vermiculite would work? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Well, it should work but it depends how you use them.

yep theres something bad in there for certain. The faqs will give you an idea of what to do with your cakes..if you can chop off parts of the cake beforehand thats fine.
