There are 4 posts on the back of my subwoofer, what do i do?
    #2929436 - 07/26/04 07:09 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Just got my subs in today, went to hook them up and there are four posts on the back. 2 pos and 2 neg. What should I do? A friend suggested connect a wire between the two reds and two blacks. Im not sure this is correct. Please advise!

I found this wiring diagram on crutchfields. Is this what I need to do?

Yeah that diagram is right then...you have two of each color post so you don't have to double up on one post....HENCE: each black is the same as hooking both wires up to one black....and red is the same....If you follow that diagram , you wil be safe!

what?

Either I read that completely wrong, or you are completely wrong.

Those are dual voic coil subs, you have to hook up ALL the posts (both coils) per sub.

The first pic in that is the subs in series. If they are 4 ohm per coil, that would give you 8ohm resistance per sub.

The second pic is parallel. If they are 4 ohm per coil, then the total ohm load is 2 ohm per SUB.

You need to figure out what ohm load your amp is stable to, then wire accordinly. YOU SHOULD NOT JUST HOOK UP ONE OF THE TWO POSTS PER SUB.

Wht amp did you get again, and paste me the FULL specs on it, and ill tell you exactly how to wire it if ohm loads and power confuse you as it does a lot of new people.

Where did he say that he had dual voice coils?

According to the diagram he showed , he has single.

AND YES....they make speakers that have posts for the purpose of what I said....

BUT......He probably shouldn't ask for advice from us on something that we can not see.........

2 pos and 2 neg per sub = dual voice coil.

I'm not trying to come across an as ass or anything, but I'm an audiophile (secl procrlaimed) and I know a TON when it comes to car and home audio.

I was helping him previously in an earlier post, and he bought some kicker comp VR DVC subs.

they are I think 4 ohm per coil. So in series a single sub would be 8 ohm resistance, and in parallell it would be 2 ohm.

and I thik he bought (if he listned to me) a monoblock amp, so he has to wire both subs to a single bridged channel.

If he wires it wrong it could possible fry his amp if its not stable.

I just hate seeing people who dont know enough blow their shit up and get pissed and dissapointed due to improper installation.

the subs in his pic are dual voice coil. a single voice coil would only have single pos and neg posts on each sub. not 2.

(also note they are called DVC in the diagram)

PA equipment and car audio are wierd setups sometimes. The audio mechanics work simliar, ohm load is still ohm load, but PA stuff is designed differently.

Feel free to PM me if you ever have any quiestions about high end car or home theater audio.

My studio equipment skills are limiited only in the fact that I dont have cash to blow on random home mixers and what not, but most logic still applies there with some exceptions.

what i did was connect a wire to the (+)post on my amp to the (+) post on the speaker that had a dot on it. I then connected a wire from the (-) post on my amp to the (-) post on the speaker that had a dot on it. I then connected a wire between the remainin g (-) and (+) posts that were on the speaker.

I dont know if this was right but I've had it like this all day and it was really loud and powerful. With the bass on my amp at 0 and the bass on the amp at 0 it makes a rumbling in my chest easily. Listening to offspring the bass sounds really good, but when I listen to sublime it kinda makes a constant rumbling noise that I dont like. My deck has a high pass and low pass but im not sure what they should be set at so I stuck them both in the middle overlapping each other.

Sorry to bring this up again, but somthing has been bothering me. If I connect the negative and positve posts together, then what is giving them power? According to that diagram I should connect them together and thats it. I dont understand. Im worried im only getting power to half of my speaker or somthing.

That is right if your trying to double your amp power by bridging.

set them at low pass. low pass means just the low frequencies pass through to your speaker. it would help to know what amp you have.

most sublime has more of a lower bassiness to it. mostly becasue the more pronounced bass is coming from eric on the bass guitar, not the drums, the drums give more of a 'punch'. the bassist gives more of a rumble.

is there a specific song from sublime that you are talking about? something like pawnshop should have both a good punch and rumble to it....

From what I understand Low pass allows all frequencies lower then the set frequency to pass to the subwoofer and attenuates all the others. High pass allows all frequencies higher then the the set frequency to pass to the mids and attenuates all others.
I have my low pass set at 80 hz and my high pass set at 90 hz.
