Library of spore pictures ?

I wonder if there is somewhere a library with pictures of spores of the different mushrooms? That would be great for identifying mushrooms that are difficult to identify otherwise.

I think that would be a excellent addition to the Shroomery. Somebody here has to have a microscope and a camera attachment. Or at least access to one. Somebody should volunteer, then others could send in prints from the various species. I don't think the library would get very large but it would still be a cool thing to see!
Maybe even just a listing of spore descriptions...

Yeah, that's a great idea. I will see if I can get a microscope.

I have got a digital camera (Canon eos 300d) and I might borrow a scope from my father, but I do not know how to fix the camera on the scope in order to take pictures. Any hints?

I have two cameras and neither one will work for me. I tried all sorts of things. Perhaps someday I will get a new scope and buy a camera made for it...

Hmmh, you can change the objectives on the Canon 300d. Maybe there is a solution for the analog Canons that works also for the digital ones ...

I don't know anything about cameras... But the one I have will not take closeups of anything worth a damn, so putting it to the eyepiece got me nothing but a blur. My other camera is a video camera that can take stills. I can set the lens on a petri and still zoom in on the mycelium extremely close. When I try it on the eyepiece it also just becomes a blur...
If I could only autofocus...

You would need to get a lens to fit on the scope. i know that they make them for micro and tello scopes. for the Canon Eos it will be costly. No mater what u are looking at a few hundred dollars most likely more. i will look up some prices.
Even scanes or good images of prints would be nice that would only take a macro lens and some good lights or a very well lit room ! With the prints i could do that. the print would not even need to be contam free. send them on a white card !

maybe you guys could hook up with a mycologist at a local university... get him interested in the project and use the lab equipment at the university
just an idea...

Take a look at this forum: http://www.ambmuggia.it/forum/index.php?showtopic=927 It has many detailed species descriptions, including spore pictures & measurements. For example Pluteus salicinus: I just entered their mycological society and hopefully I'll soon learn how to make such pictures.

I have found this adapter for the Canon Eos 300d but it is very pricey. A guy on ebay seems to make the adapters himself for quite cheap. But I do not know how well they work ... Here is a link: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?View...ssPageName=WDVW

To start with even good pictures of nice sporeprints would be helpful. Maybe we could make a section here at the shroomery? What do the mods think about that?

Good luck with this project Arno!

The expensive ones have optical elements to replace the ocular of microscope, while the cheap ones are just tubes that fit on the ocular. The expensive ones are used by professionals, but you can make great pictures with a good microscope and a cheap adapter or even without an adapter if you just point you camera trough the ocular and focus to infinity.
This is a picture of spores I took:
The image is not very sharp but that is because of modest quality of microscope not of adapter.
I have an 15 years old EOS 650 that still works fine. I?ll buy an digital EOS, but I?m waiting because I heard rumors that Canon will release cheaper and better models this fall.

The pics looks good for me. What kind of spores are that? How do you display the measurement stuff of the spores in the pic? Since you can remove the lens from the EOS 300D I assume that you can buy the cheap adapter that uses the ocular of the microscope as a lens. What do you think?

Those are P. cubensis (Malabar) spores at 750x magnification (if I remember correctly). I took a picture of micrometer at the same magnification as spores and then I put the bitmap in a CAD program and scaled it accordingly to magnification rate I calculated from the micrometer bitmap.

That's what I did. You should get much better pictures then the above. When I scan the film I get the same results as if I was using a 1.5Mpixel digital camera.
