Anyone ever grown Salvia Divinorum?
    #2928206 - 07/26/04 10:04 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all, has anyone ever grown Salvia Divinorum? I'm currently growing two plants right now, there developing quite nicely. I was wondering If anyone knows how large the plant should be before i take some cuttings?

Here are my plants.

Lookin' good. You could take cuttings now, if you want. The top 6" of each plant would make fine cuttings, and the bottoms will quickly sprout new growth at the top nodes.

how many cuttings do you think i could get off each plant? would 4-5 small leaves for each cutting be enough for it to survive?

how long have you had the plants?once i got a plant and it looked healthy for about 2 months, and then it's leaves slowly started to turn brown and fall off. i kept it on life support for over a year before it finally kicked the bucket.what kind of enviroment do you have them in?

Ive had those plants for about a month. There growing under a halogen lamp thats on a 15 hour light cycle. temperature is about 70-75 degrees. I water twice a day and use a special plant nutrient formula in every watering. I also mist them about 6 times a day.

What size a pot did you have your plants in when they dried up? you have to repot salvia as it grows. They seem to like lots of root space and lots of water.

4 or 5 small leaves would be plenty. I've had success with a bit of stem that had a node and no leaves (just a very tiny sprout, about 0.25" long). It takes a lot longer to get going, since it can't photosynthesise much, but it will grow.
I generally like to use 6" lengths of stem, with three sets of leaves, so that they have one set of young leaves about 4" long, a set of leaves about 1" long, and a set of leaves just forming.

what method did you use to clone?

from what ive read all you need to do is stick your cutting in a glass of water with some rootone mixed in and wait about a week till the roots start forming, then plant.

I have had stems with barley noticable secondary growth survive. I would recomend having a few leaves on it, but you would be suprised. I just stick mine in some cups of water and then set them inside an aquarium that is humidified with perlite and spray them a couple times a day. You have to aclimate them to normal humidity after this, but I have had higher success rates with this method. If you want rooting hormone they have it at Wal-Mart and Home Depot. I have never used it on Sally though.

I always cut just above a node. This way, new growth forms right at the top of the old plant, which looks better (and you don't have a big stump sticking out which could easily get infected), and for me, roots always form at the bottom of the cutting first anyway, not from a node. In fact, I have never seen roots on a node before I put them in soil.

don't cut these guys till after they are at least 2 feet tall.
they can grow 8 feet tall
pinch the apical meristems of a branch once the branch is 4" to 6" and you get fuller growth.

I will take cuttings after another 8 inches growth.
meantime some of the side growths got knocked off and rooted up nicely already.

I give it distilled water so as not to add salts to the soil
it is the closest to natural rain.

"pinch the apical meristems of a branch once the branch is 4" to 6" and you get fuller growth."

I'm not exactly a botonist, what does that mean?

"Apical meristem" is the scientific way to say "the growing tip at the top of the branch."

I'm trying to make a salvia bush at the moment, by pinching each branch once it has three nodes (I cut off the fourth node). It's small at the moment, but should eventually produce a very nice compact plant...
