Fully colonized micobags not fruiting
    #2928361 - 07/26/04 12:59 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

My friend has two grain mycobags innoculated with ecquador that are 99% white, except for a tiny bit on the bottom of both. They are both getting light and staying around room temp, slightly lower (75-73.) Its been a month now, and no pins, nothing. Just a bag of white.

Any ideas? I tried putting one in the fridge for 8 hours, but didnt seem to have an effect.

Bags can take a few weeks to fruit. Be patient. A white bag is a healthy bag.

They've been fully colonized for a month or they were innoculated a month ago?

My batch took over 4 weeks to start fruiting, but the cakes still look healthy. I started panicing and did the dunk-tek. That may have helped a little, since I originally botched the recipe and omitted about 3/4cup of water. They still haven't been fruiting hard.. except the 2 cakes that I cased. Those made some huge mutha's.

Also, it could depend on the spores to some degree. My current batch took almost 2 months to get to 100% colonization. This was from a syringe I made over 2 years ago. My new 1/2 batch with a fresh syringe is already 50-70% colonized and it's only been a week. The less time it takes for colonization, the less water lost to evaporation (if your jars are slightly open like mine were), and hopefully the less chance of contamination.

From now on, I'm only doing half batches every month or two. 10cc's per 6 half-pint jars gets them started much quicker. It's also not catastrophic if an entire batch gets contaminated, because the old batch will still be fruiting. Last, my pressure cooker only fits 6 jars, so it all works out real nice.

Just hang tight. I find that growing these little things teaches patience, possibly more than anything else.

Should be fine! Colonized at 83-ish now stays a cool 72 or so, maybe a tad higher when no AC runs... even a cold shock in the fridge over night on one bag. Maybe just being stubborn and slow.

Open the bags on top like you would to harvest... and let some air in, then fold and seal with paperclips. They need air, this will help.
