large mushroom(s) and some Reishi
    #2924599 - 07/24/04 08:52 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I found these on a hike today, they are all bruised up because I had to walk about 7km with them in a bag. I wasn't planning on finding any mushrooms with all the dry weather, so i was pleasantly surprised to find these.
I found them under large conifers in a 2nd growth forest, the top of the mushroom was dry dull brown and fuzzy but where it was bruised it blackened and went smooth. the large one is about 8" across, it is huge.
there was no blackening effect on any of them until they became bruised. no special odor. no spore print yet.
there is also a bolete in the first picture which i did not mean to include.

also some reishi i picked along the way

Looks like Paxillus to me.

Judgeing from the inrolled margin and black/brown bruising I would guess Paxillus involutus.

Poisonous :puke:

Nice reishi

In the second picture, on the smaller specimen toward the bottom right of the photograph, it is rather clear to me that there is a fuzzy black texture on the stipe. This stalk texture is reminiscent of Paxillus atrotomentosus, which usually grows on or close to dead stumps of coniferous trees. P. involutus is similar in shape and size to P. atrotomentosus but usually grayer and less tomentose on the cap. P. involutus, of course, lacks the tomentose surface of the stipe and is usually found growing on the ground.

Are these specimens all part of one large group of mushrooms? It seems that the larger specimen also has a tomentose stalk but I cannot be sure from your photographs.

Here are some pictures of the specimens in question that I found in central Poland last summer:

A large P. involutus cap.

P. involutus. The picture is temperature-corrected. It was taken in early morning sunlight.

Finally, P. atrotomentosus. It was found at around the same time. The bolete to the left of the Paxillus is Tylopilus felleus, the bitter bolete.

Also, if you may, where were these mushrooms found? In what approximate region?

Good luck.

thanks for the replies. Those pictures do look similar... but then again so does a blackening russula look similar? The large one was found separate from the others in a different area and they were found in Mission, British Columbia.

Yeah I saw the last one today...but i couldn't harvest it....because the cap kept falling off so i gave up and now I found one that was a mix between the first and second picture...orange but had a cap caving in.
