Substrate jars too dry?
    #2925145 - 07/25/04 01:41 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

About 3 out of 7 of my jars have some trace of colonization now, and the ones that were more moist have colonized more by now. The ones that look pretty dry, are they hopeless for colonizing all the way or what? Its only been about a week and they're looking dehydrated! I'm worried!!

Well before you chuck them you might as well boil up some water put it in a syringe, let it cool and try and moisten the sub. What the hell nothing to loose if they are dry.

even if they weren't that dry, would it hurt to do it anyway?

Adding sterilized or distilled water in measured amounts to jars which are too dry will not harm them. If boiling, allow the water to cool, and make sure your needle is clean. If you are working with vermiculite jars, just make sure to try and distribute the water evenly by tilting the jar when injecting the new water in (or using multiple injection sites). If working with whole graines you can just shake the jar after introducing more water to mix things up.
