Good book for learning?
    #2927509 - 07/26/04 01:25 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

The on-line teks are great, but I would like to find a good book explaining some techniques (details of cakes and of casings mostly.) The teks are certainly a good place to pick up good ideas, but they are lacking ... for example, i read a good deal about casing and I still have no idea what it is about (ok i get _general_ the idea, but don't understand how it works really). Anyways, some people say that Paul Statement's books are good, while others say they are too advanced for a hobbyist. What are your experiences?

My vote goes for 'The Mushroom Cultivator' by Stamets. Very straight forward and informative on all aspects of growing.

His books are excellent starts. They are easy to understand, and you advance with the book. There is really nothing in there that a typical home grower could not do, given a little practice. Never be scared something may be too advanced for you. A wise man once said "No one is born with the knowledge to do something. This knowledge is gained though study and experience. If one man can do it, so can you.".

If I were to recommend one book, it would be "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" by Paul Stamets. But, I suggest you get "The Mushroom Cultivator" first, as it has info on growing Cubensis, and an excellent section on the common contaminats of mushroom culture...
