that one shot is all you really need.

cL0k_w0Rk,
This was to be an experimental "open-air" casing but I never found space on a shelf, instead it was thrown in a rubbermaid container I had sitting around. No humidification of any kind, just misting the casing layer before and after pinning. That realeased enough moisture on its own to support the fruit bodies. I don't believe in perlite or humidifiers, its all messy garbage to deal with!

Thanks ShroomPharmer,
I prefer to pick them when the cap is totally horizontal. Much discussion on this topic, I find the yield is better in the end though, with same magic content as younger picked fruits. To each his own.
FREE YOURSELFS FROM THE PERLITE AND HUMIDIFIERS!

cL0k_w0Rk,
You heard right, ONLY misting for me. Even got rid of the aquarium bubbler that was once used, due to droplets of water landing on my fruits and killing them off...not fun.
Its pretty simple, mist your casing once or twice a day. I just make the casing and throw it wherever, in a plastic bag or inside a rubbermaid container. Once mycelium pokes through surface, make sure to add light and fan once or twice a day, while still misting. When pinheads appear, continue to mist AROUND the pins (important, dont get water on heads).
This whole process provides enough humidification off the casing layer to keep the fruits in good health. This would not work with most species though, such as P. Mexicana, I recall AtomHeart saying that they died if not provided proper humidity.
Where I'm going with this is: Cubensis is a forgiving and easy species to grow out. Unless you are growing PF style cakes, do away with that nightmare called perlite and so forth!
