stupid question
    #2924732 - 07/25/04 12:05 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I have trouble makings substrate, PF to be exact
I made substrate and when i was done sterilizing
the jars BRF is chunky and concentrated in the bottom
third of the jar in the top 2/3 there brf is sparse.

Im pretty sure i added to much water, not way too much though.
Will the myc have problems colonizing? Should i ditch em or wait?

if there is ever any doubt, its always best to throw away a lil verm and brf, instead of waisting valuable spores and time. try again, and just make sure you do it by the book, good luck!

Carefully measure out the ingredients and have them ready next to a nice size mixing bowl. Put the verm and the water into the bowl and mix it up with a cake mixer. (the cheap little hand mixer with the detachable beaters works fine,if you dont have one you can usually find a cheap one at a department store for about 10 bucks.) Now slowly add in the brf as you mix it up with the mixer. Using this method will definately give you a thorough mix every time without making your arm go numb.

Good Luck!
MYKEY

Those metal wisk thingys work pretty well too, and they're only a buck.

ok i tried again and im happy with my current result!

i poured in too much water this time aswell. so i just poured the remaining water in the sink and left like 60 or so ml left, turned out excellent.

EDIT

how do i know if the dextrose or maltose sugars have carmelized?

When you get to much, and back when I did cakes I always did the quick squeeze test so simple and if you have too much water I just added a bit more of the dry mix until the squezze test resulted in just a few drops. I like to too mix dry for the most part and then add the water this distributes the mix better IMHO but I still mix throughly for a consistancy that I can live with  Remember the squeeze test right?
