Help with my Green Beans
    #2924652 - 07/24/04 11:25 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Well other than the fact that I had to replant them because nothing was coming up, something keeps eating the leaves to the point where they look like swiss cheese. The rest of my garden is doing fine. I have corn, peas, green beans, carrots, beets, tomatoes, and cucumbers for the record.

nice garden. like funkymonk suggested in the other thread, a cayenne spray may work.

just take some ground red pepper and put it in a spray bottle. let it sit for a while, then shake it up a bit and spray on your plants. garlic sprays work too. you could even put both garlic and cayenne in the spray.

This might be completely off topic, but when I was a little kid my neighbor let me run around their garden and eat any vegetable I wanted, and I always choose the fresh string beans!!   They're so good!

One thing that helps beans come up is soaking them in water for a few hours before planting, and using a legume innoculant, which is a powder that you shake them in before planting that contains nitrogen fixing bacteria. Also, water them in good when you plant, then none, or just a little if it's really hot, until they come up, then resume normal watering.

What's eating them are bean leaf beetles. They look very similar to a ladybug. Best thing for them, if you want to stay natural is rotenone dust. usually once the plants are big enough, they can eat some, and still not harm production too much, but they can do a number on new seedlings.
