Green mold on Moe's Outdoor Patch...
    #2924076 - 07/24/04 06:53 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

My neighbors have pictures but they seem to be uneducated in the area of shrinking the pics down to post on the net. The patch is circular in shape, about 28-29 inches in diameter, 6 inches deep, and was create using Moe's Tek. The network of mycelium made it's way to the surface quickly and was doing very well. After that brilliant white showed through about 10-15% of the surface, it slowly started to take that god awful green tint and slowly darkened. After a day or two it seemed to go away on its own, but now after about 45 grams wet have been cropped, the green mold is back and seems to be only on the very surface of the patch. Some new mushies are popping up but unfortunately right out of the green mold. Should he take a spoon and rake off as much as he can in hopes that the mycelium will win the battle or do just as the tek says and leave it alone and hope that nature win fight the battle for him. Thanks for ya'lls help. And if anyone can tell me how to post a thumbnail picture or shrink down the file size, I would be all so grateful. Talk to ya'll later.

I really dont know what to recommend but...

Is the substrate fully colonized with a casing layer of some sort? Substrate type? Is the mold growing on the casing layer, substrate, or the mycelium itsself?

As for posting a file:
Search for a free image editing program. You can use them to shrink the picture size, or increase the compression to shrink the file size. Then to post a thumbnail, just follow the instructions when uploading an image on the MyPics > Upload page.

First I staked a 6-inch fiberglass retainer wall that sticks up about an inch above the ground for the perimeter of the 30 in diameter hole I dug. Next, I laid and staked a weed barrier in the hole and within the retainer wall. I it cut so that it rose about an inch above the retainer wall. Next, I took 12 fully colonized PF cakes of EQ and crumpled them up in the hole. Then I packed some of the soaked hay I had on top of that. I then put about an inch of manure over the hay. This was followed by about an inch of some more hay. Next, I crumpled up 12 more PF cakes of EQ on top of the hay. Then I placed a very thin layer of hay on top of those cakes, just enough to let the pieces of cakes show through. I then mixed an equal amount of manure, hay, and earth well and made about an inch and a half layer on top of that. Finally, I laid a very thin layer on hay on top. I have an automated sprinkler system that comes on every night at 3am for about a 1/2-hour. I check it every day and if the surface appears to be dry, I give it a sprinkle. Within 6 days the mycelium came to the surface and with in 14 days it has produced about 80 grams wet. Though I have only harvested 40 or so in fear that the rest are contaminated with the green mold that has appeared. I'll get on to those pics and see if I can get some posted for you guys. Later

Thanks.... I?ll set the sprinklers for every other day for a bit.... we have been getting a lot of rain around here, so that makes a lot of sense. Thanks. Here are a few pics of my stealthy outdoor patch.

Can you see it?

Ahhh, there it is.

And this is the green mold I've been stressing about. I'll let it dry up a bit and fill ya'll in on how it goes.

And hopefully there will be a lot more porn in the future.

I have more pics, but these are all it would let me post. Given that the files were big to begin with, I was surprised that I was able to post this many and still have them look decent. Later.

The retaining wall is merely a vertical wall that is about six inches in height that has been sunk into the ground about 5 inches. It is a professional fiberglass gardening barrier ring that landscapers use to outline flowerbeds and to keep mulch and such in the flowerbeds. The weed barrier is also the same brand and what most professionals use when creating flowerbed and such around office buildings and high-end homes. I thought since I was only making a 2 1/2 diameter patch, I wasn't going to spare any expense on a proper barrier to keep snails and such out of the patch, plus I wanted the best weed barrier to keep anything from coming up through the dirt like worms and such. After searching and doing a little research, everyone I talk to involved in gardening told me that the brand of weed barrier I bought was the best when it concerned water exchange and drainage with the soil below the "flower bed". I am also using snail and slug bait throughout the area that is about a foot away all around that patch. I'm going to readjust the sprinklers and follow up on this with you guys here real soon. Thanks.

i do my outdoor grow in a 50 gallon plastic drum with holes in the bottom. no slugs or anything get in there, i also caught a spider that used to live directly in front of my front door and i put him in there, now he has a nice protected home, and ive got free insect control, i knock his web down all the time but he seems to not care.
