3 weeks and no mushrooms
    #2924015 - 07/24/04 06:25 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Ive had my 4 cakes in the chamber for 3 weeks now they still arent doing anything. The temp is around 71 degrees, humidity is 90+, i fan about 4-5 times a day, and it gets normal daylight hours for light. Actually one cake grew about 4 primordia, i can see them sticking out, but they havent grown at all in 4 days. Other than that, the other cakes havent shown any signs of primordia, but they have been pinning for 2 weeks now. I'd try cold shocking them, but there is too much mycel growth (knots) to do that. Comments?

I just birthed them into the terrarium without dunking. Im pretty sure that humidity is 100%, because after my hygrometer gets past 90, it just turns to high, and theres condensation all over my gauge. I havent misted at all because i'm using the perlite humidifing technique. Do I still have to mist? I thought that misting would cause primordia to abort.

Quit looking at them ...the shrooms are shy and wont grow when you keep looking at them

It's a metaphor that when you keep looking at them, it seems like nothing will happen.

I got a few pieces of advice. Cakes seem dehydrated, otherwise mycelium should be growing like crazy if mushrooms aren't. PF cakes are easily spent because they get dry fairly easily, so they should have been dunked before every flush including the first. Now isn't too late to do that. Cold shocking isn't going to do no good, so pass on that useless step. You've obviously met the dew point, but that will sometimes bring down the humidity. Don't worry about what some people may think, 75F is a perfect fruiting temperature and is good for keeping high humidity which will help it flush more. When the temperatures are lower (closer to the dew point) you get more condensation. This is bad for the reason that you don't want sitting water on the cakes ever, with as much moisure in the air. Also under this rule, the idea of misting should be thrown out. The humidity portion of the terrarium is covered by the perlite, and dunking the cake is for hydrating it. Nothing more is needed. Misting would do nothing but put standing water on the cake's surface.

Make sure the cakes aren't sitting on the perlite either. You only want moisture from the air.

Do what needs to be done and be patient about everything. I swear, the mushrooms gods will make you wait until you don't care sometimes. You never get away with being too excited, by the time you get some mushrooms, you might end up putting them off for a week because of the new wisdom you've acquired.
