Iraq - Al Qaeda connection from 9/11 report
    #2923547 - 07/24/04 02:12 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

"In July [1998], an Iraqi delegation traveled to Afghanistan to meet first with the Taliban and then with bin Laden...Similar meetings between Iraqi officials and bin Laden ? or his aides may have occurred in 1999 during a period of some reported strains with the Taliban. According to the reporting, Iraqi officials offered bin Laden a safe haven in Iraq. But to date, we have seen no evidence that these or earlier contacts ever developed into a collaborative operational relationship, nor have we seen evidence indicating that Iraq cooperated with Al Qaeda in developing or carrying out any attacks against the United States."

So knowing that Iraq and Al Qaeda were talking, and with all intel saying they have WMDs, which they still could find, how could you NOT go into Iraq?

Um, contries that are next to each other talk to each other.
The Taliban was not Al Qaeda, but a regime that harborred them.
Going into Iraqu was perpetuation in a cycle of murder and abuse.
By your own statement, there is no evidance that Bin Laden even hid in Iraqu.

Nope, there was chatter. And the Taliban had huge connections to Al Qaeda, they were basically the same entity at the time.

I don't think MAGnum read the post. The post was not about Iraq talking to the Taliban it was about Iraq talking with Al-Qaeda, specifically when Al-Q was having problems with the Taliban and were offered a haven in Iraq. Whatever, they seemed to have worked out their problems with the Taliban and thus nothing further came of the contacts

I still find it as nuts to have intel that they were talking, with all the other intel given to you, and for you not to do anything about it. Maybe we should just wait for them to tell us where they are, what they are planning to do, when they are planning to do it, and from where they aquire what they need to do it. Maybe only then it would be a good idea to take action...

It was a great risk to have Iraq and Al Qaeda possibly chatting, especially with the intel about all the WMD's. How on Earth would you sit on your ass and let anything happen?

Read the other thread about the Pakistan connection. Now tell me, the Pakistani intelligence chief was not just "talking to Al-Qaeda", he financed the 9/11 attacks themselves. The only sanction was that he had to look for another job, and that was only after this fact got publically known.

How could you NOT go into Pakistan? I wonder...

It's almost as if we went after the one country(Iraq) that didn't have a hand in 9-11.

Yeah, they fired their intelligence chief who financed 9/11. In fact you are right.
The real question here would be, among many others: why didn't the US want that guy more than just sacked? I don't know, maybe interrogated, arrested,... the usual procedure when investigating a crime and finding its moneyman. But merely sacking him was more than enough cooperation.

Pakistan created the Taliban (on the US's demand), and financed 9/11, they're friends.
Iraq "talked to" Al-Qaeda, they must burn.

Ignorance is bliss. War is peace.

Iraq also would give us the cold shoulder about where the WMD's are.

So I presume you're keen to arrest the american oil corporations who invited the Taliban over to America and treated them like kings?

What WMD's?

Why don't you answer the "real question" I was talking about?
