mulch "growing" in your backyard? I would look everywhere. It sounds like a great environment. I often find Gyms growing on mossy logs in places just like you have described. Don't be fooled by these.
Whitches Hat (Hygrocybe conica, or Hygrophorus conicus) These were found today, on the ground, in a place like you have described (not the grassy field). No Gyms today; yesterday I found some rotten ones. It seems like the first flush of what I believe to be spectabilis is over; seems like it takes a while between flushes. If I were you, I would check that place every couple of days. Ps. I'm in mid-eastern Ohio. Peace

Is the witches hat poisonous or hallucinogenic? My book says it has caused 4 deaths in China. Just wondering.

This is my favorite mushroom because it is reported as edible, poisonous, and hallucinogenic! Aoroa says "EDIBILITY: Not recommended. It was once considered poisonous, perhaps due to its blackening qualities, but also because four deaths were (mistakenly?)attributed to it. Now it is generally regarded as harmless, but Larry Stickney, chef extraordinaire, meandering mainstay of the Mycological Society of San Fransico, and an inimitable mushroom-loving marvel of a man, says it 'elicited an odd sensation of lightheadedness and numbness" when he tried it" (Arora, 117). There' s no way I would eat one of those things. They are interesting nonetheless.
