straw

Most of the straw teks call for pasteurizing, not sterilizing, why? Is there an advantage that pasteurizing has over sterilizing? I plan to load 4 1 litre jars with straw and water. I'm gonna use new lids and seal the jars for use later in a few weeks. I've read that when pasteurizing you shouldn't exceed certain temps or you will germinate baddies, will a pc at 15psi kill everything, or is this why ppl pasteurize.

Pasteurization doesn't kill off beneficial bacteria.

to elaborate...

it kills the bad stuff and leaves some good stuff, in simple terms.

if you look in adv cultivation, Hippie3 has a bleach tek in there that when combined with Lime treatment of the straw makes it almost impossible to contaminate before the spawn runs.

other interesting threads: RogerRabbit's straw logs, ShroomQT's straw logs, Hippie3's bleach teks.

straw is good shit, cheap, idiot proof and produces large oyster fruits.

No ,it wouldnt kill the nutes. The problem is that it will kill any microorganisms and leave the straw completely sterile. Since the straw will be immediately exposed to a host of contaminant micro-organsims once you open the pc,it will undoubtably become rapidly colonized by some sort of mold or bacteria. If you pasteurize you will have an army of beneficial micro's that will guard the straw for about two weeks while the myc has a chance to colonize and defend itslef.
