Fog of War
    #2920934 - 07/23/04 03:00 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Has anyone here seen "Fog of War" with Robert S. McNamara? I just saw it recently and found much of it fascinating, especially when his lessons are applied to the current section in Iraq (though the movie itself makes no reference to current-day events). Especially interesting was when he quoted JFK as saying "One of the primary jobs of a president is to keep the country out of war". Very interesting when you keep that quote in mind and contrast the Cuban Missle Crisis with the situation in Iraq. The most chilling part was when he had talked with a man who was a leader of Cuba at the time of the crisis (can't remember who, I don't think it was Castro) and asked him what would have happened if the U.S. had invaded and what would have been the consequences for Cuba. The guy said that Cuba would have unquestionably launched all of its nuclear weapons at the moment of being attacked and yes, it would have meant the annihilation of Cuba, but that was what they were prepared to do.

So, those who have seen the movie, what were your thoughts on it?

I haven't seen the movie, but I can assure you the leader in Cuba at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis was indeed Fidel Castro. Must have been one of Castro's top lieutenants, though offhand I can't imagine which one it might be.

right, that's why I made a point of saying 'a' leader rather than 'the' leader.
