Still waiting for either Gern or Alex to explain to me how how and/or why this plan is so flawed.

Like I'm going to spend my time replying to a thread (this post notwithstanding) that contains such wonderfully thought out and socially conscious verbal tidbits as:

Quote:

social security is welfare, and it is a burden on certain members of society.

I'm so over this bullshit. I have better things to do.

I'll take that as a blatant admission of defeat then. You took one sentence from someone(see: not me)'s post and used it as an excuse to write off the entire thread. Had a very large amount of respect for you until now. What a shame.

Look... First of all, I didn't claim the tidbit was yours.

Second. I don't have an intimate knowledge of social security, but it is not fucking welfare. That much I do know. I do, however, understand globalization and quite specifically the human rights issues relating to globalization. While this has nothing to do with human rights, it is a topic about privatization; something that goes hand in hand with globalization in many ways.

Based on my limited knowledge of the intricacies of SS, I limited my initial post to six whole words. That's all I really had to say. If you'd like to discuss privatization, start another thread and I'm sure I'll be happy to join in.

I appreciate that you "had" some respect for me until now - but one of the things about my interactions on these boards is that I will not spout bullshit about things about which I don't know enough to hold a reasonable and educated viewpoint.

I'm in a foul mood tonight, and if that screwed up anyone's night of arguing with anonymous strangers on the internet, then I couldn't be more sorry.

It would spark a movement for national financial literacy.

And once the lower class saw how the money in their accounts was growing, it may just entice them to invest even more money and live their lives wisely. Maybe instead of signing a high interest contract for the rent-to-own big screen TV, the single mother who is renting thinks twice about how her money would best be spent.

good call.

Money is Power

Is money is fascinating and glorious? Is it is a quite divisive and a separating force? What the hell is money? Money is sometimes considered a figment of imagination. Our money is an abstract concept that is backed by no commodity. What makes money worth value is the common belief that it has value. As long as everyone believes it has value, it has value. In reality, currency is just a piece of paper with printing on it. Most money today isn't even printed; it just flies throughout the air invisibly in electronic wavelengths moving it from one account to another. Get your paycheck by direct deposit, pay your bills with your credit card, and then pay off your card balance through an online transfer from your bank.

Money may defy an easy explanation, and the history of money can be quite intriguing. One thing money is though, at least today, is power.

What would be the social implications of the lower economic classes accumulating monetary wealth and owning stock in corporate America? What is that I read somewhere about the worker owning the means of production? It should appeal to the Marxist bent of some of our shroomy luminaries. Owning stock conveys to the holder the right to propose shareholder initiatives and vote at corporate annual meetings.

Its a nice thought, but the problem is that something like Enron happens and destroys all confidence. The stockmarket is based on trust. What else can it be based on when money is "an abstract concept"? Don't think I trust the govt. to invest my retirement fund either. Who can we trust? Ourselves, I know. But what if the company you invest in goes broke, or your country's currency is devaluated etc etc (like in Argentina, Mexico etc) I think I'm just going to dig a hole in the garden and put all my money into it.

Enron is the tip. If you have any money BUY PROPERTY. The stock market is a fixed game just like Vegas. Run away, unless you have a seat on the exchange, which is a license to fleece the suckers. If you're not an insider you're an outsider and will be the first to fall. P.T. Barnum was dead right when he said there was a sucker born every minute
