Bush is pissing me off (again)
    #2919794 - 07/23/04 09:05 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Yes. Once again. I watched him for one minute on tv, if even. He's speaking in Detroit or some bullshit. Anyways, he says the reason terrorists attacked was because they are jealous that people in America can worship who they want. I'm like wtf? He's saying they are jealous they can't worship God like Christians or something and that's why they attacked?

That's like blaming Hitler's invasion on Poland based on the fact that Germany's national language was german, and not polish, so Germany was jealous.

Bush is correct about that. Al Qaeda attacks those they deem not godly enough.

Sorry it pissed you off to have to learn that from Bush rather than spend the time yourself to see what the terrorists themselves have said about it, but hey.

Actually Chrsitians thought they were God's chosen people, and so did the Jews, they still do. Except they don't fly jumbo jets into buildings to prove that.

I am perplexed that so many are so deficient in practical thinking skills that they are unable to grasp the concept that our foreign policy MIGHT have something to do with people hating us all over the globe. No, the ignoramuses think it's just that they're jealous of our freedoms. Hogwash! Might the fact that American forces are all over the earth, the U.S.'s biggest recipient of foreign aid is Isreal, the U.S. enforced years of sanctions on Iraq that had more effect on destroying the hope of the common man there than dislodging a dictator, that U.S. bombs (regardless of stated intentions) blow apart the bodies of numerous innocents and that the U.S. materially supports repressive regimes in the Muslim part of the world have a little, teensy, weensy influence on people's feelings? I know the terrorists themselves have expressed the sentiments that these are part of the reason, but...

... nah, I guess they only hate us because of our freedoms. Yep, I know this because the dullard in chief says so. It's a good thing the Bush administration is working dilligently to destroy those freedoms, so those crazy A-rabs won't be so jealous of us any more and we can live in peace.

Evolving writes:

I am perplexed that so many are so deficient in practical thinking skills that they are unable to grasp the concept that our foreign policy MIGHT have something to do with people hating us all over the globe.

Hating is different from attacking.

I got a new computer a few months back, and it uses a different kind of hard drive technology. I was therefore unable to just install my old hard drive, and am thus unable to retrieve any of my carefully sorted bookmarks from Internet Explorer. If I had access to them, I could give you the source of the following paraphrase from a prominent Jihadist: (remember this is not an exact quote, but the sense of it is accurate)

We attack you not because of what you do, but because of who you are.

I have no doubt that certain US foreign policy over the years has pissed off mightily a whole hell of a lot of people in other countries. This doesn't explain terrorist attacks in other Western countries, however.

No, the ignoramuses think it's just that they're jealous of our freedoms. Hogwash!

Well, I strive mightily not to be an ignoramus, so I have taken the time to search out what the movers and shakers of the Jihadists actually say. This is why I can't crtiticize Bush's statement. He is in fact correct on this one. Many Arab specialists have come to the same conclusions. Reading the writings of the founders of the various Jihadist movements makes things clearer.

.. nah, I guess they only hate us because of our freedoms.

They actually hate us because we are:

1) ungodly (which leads to freedom, as there is no divinely-mandated restraint operating -- especially on our women))
2) outrageously successful (in comparison to The Faithful) despite this ungodliness

Islam as interpreted by the Jihadists allows virtually no freedom (especially for women) -- all is submission to the will of Allah. Yet the countries where The Religion of Peace predominates are quite obviously falling further and further behind those countries where it doesn't. This disconnect enrages some, and they lash out -- not against the teachings of the mullahs, but against those who ignore the teachings of the mullahs yet have (in comparison) vastly better lives.

We in the West chuckle over the term "The Great Satan," finding it amusing or a mere propaganda term, but those who coined the term quite literally believe it. To them, the only possible explanation for our (relative) success while flying directly in the face of all Mohammed's (peace be upon him) teachings is that we are -- quite literally -- in league with Shaitan. As such, it is the duty of The Virtuous to put us to the sword.

Here's something I came across recently, but I do wish I had access to all my old bookmarks -- I could provide you many more expounding on the same theme: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/07/04/INGOT7CJF11.DTL

I just want to expand a little bit on your point about the Muslim's world relative lack of modern success. From the first few centuries until the time of the Crusades, they were far more advanced than the rest of the world mainly matters of science and technology, though the arts and economics were certainly not lacking. Indeed, many of the discoveries credited to those in the history taught today would be more deserved by their Islamic counterparts.

If you read many of these writings of the fundamentalists, many whom consider themselves scholars, this is a source of great frustration. Not only from that they aren't recognized but that they have so hopelessly fallen behind the rest of the world. As pinky pointed out, many believe this success we enjoy is from Satan himself. To say that they hate our freedoms, though not an all encompassing explanation, is certainly not incorrect.

Sorry for the sidetrack but this reminded me of a funny story.

I used to work with a retired Michigan state trooper. There was a statute there, as in most places, that profanity is a ticketable offense though it wasn't often enforced. We'll he and his partner were driving through some suberb of (not Detriot, but I can't recall right now, maybe Flint) when some guy yells out to them "Fuck you cops." So they stop and go up to the guy and he repeatedly says "mother fucker, you can't do shit to me" so they give him a ticket for cussing.

When it gets to court it was this black judge who was known for dismissing cases against blacks for no other reason than them being black. So when this guys gets up and reads the charges, he calls the cops and everyone up and says "You don't understand. Mother fucker is a term of endearment in the black community. I'm dismissing these charges. " So they walk out and when then get to the door, his partner turns around says "See you later mother fucker" to the judge in a packed court room and walk out.
