Is sceletium self-fertile?
    #2919634 - 07/23/04 09:48 AM (13 years, 2 days ago)

The flowers on one of my sceletiums have just opened up!
But only on one plant. I don't think it's  supposed to be flowering yet, since the seeds were only planted seven months ago. The other plants show no signs of making flower buds, so I'm wondering, will I be able to collect seeds off this one plant?

Edit: I've just noticed that two more flower buds have just started to form!

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. I just wanted to comment on your beautiful specimen! I hope mine flowers like that. The leaves on yours are much bigger than the ones I have going. Do you fertilize? How often and with what?

Sorry, I really can't give any special tips. I think I just got lucky with this one. It's been pretty neglected actually.
Seeds were planted on Dec 24th, and sprouted in a few weeks. They were under flouros until early April (at which point they had just started developing side branches), and then they were put outside in a greenhouse, although it still wasn't very warm, and they didn't get any direct sun on their shelf, but humidity would have been a bit higher than normal. Soil mix is roughly 2 parts John Innes number 3, 1 part sand.
Summer has only just arrived here in England, so they have spent their lives without too much heat or light.
One difference between the flowering one and my others is that the flowering one was attacked by birds, and lost the tips off most of its branches, a month or so before I noticed the buds forming. Maybe it thought it was going to die, and flowered in a last attempt to make seeds?
I still haven't been able to find out if it can pollinate itself, but the insects are certainly trying!

Sure, I'll save some pollen for you... Do you think it would be OK to store it in the dark in the fridge, like keeping spores?
