how to prepare manure bought at wallmart
    #2917103 - 07/22/04 07:58 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

my foaf bought some manure at wallmart, should he put it outside to let it dry before mixing it with straw, then pasteurize? or can he just mix it right in?

check the package and make sure it is 100% natural manure with no additives. You may have to leach it depending on the product but probably not, sterilization is all that is needed. Search for the tek.

Apparently just making sure it's 100% manure isn't good enough. AFOAF had some bad luck with Black Kow brand manure (which says it's 100% on the bag) and then after doing a search for it here read that it contains a fungicide.

Most farms have to pay money to get their poo poo disposed of. Im sure they wouldnt mind a strapping young lad like yourself picking it up and using it in your tomato beds.

If you are talking about the $1.09 for 40lb bag (The one I am using) it is composted. Just add water and what ever else (i used vermiculate) and pasteurize. It works good.

I like to mix in some straw but straight manure works. Adding vermor coir helps but its expensive compared to straw and straw has nutrients for the shrooms so you can get more per volume of substrate.
