Recent edible finds
    #2916977 - 07/22/04 07:12 PM (13 years, 29 days ago)

I've been out in the woods almost everyday for the last couple of weeks, trying to learn how to use my new camera. These are some of my finds.

(Bondarzewia berkeleyi) found growing at the base of a live oak.
I took a little piece home just to try. It was delicious.

(Cantharellus lateritius)
Smooth Chanterelles are so thick its hard not to step on them around here.
chanterelle stuffed rainbow trout.

(Laetiporus sulphureus)
A few small chickens.

And a massive flush of Laetiporus sulphureus just getting started. I found these today. The other side of this log was also covered. There will probably be fifty pounds of mushrooms there next week. Has anybody tried canning these?

Peace.

Arora, David. "Mushrooms Demystified". Ten Speed Press, Berkeley. 1986: pages 556 and 565.

Bondarzewia montana's " only close relative, B. berkeleyi, is quite similar but usually has fewer (one to five), broader, paler (whitish to gray or yellowish-tan)caps and slightly larger pores, plus it favors hardwoods (especially oak and maple). (Arora, 565).

Spore print: white

Smell: fragrant, slightly sweet, good.

Taste: very similar to a califlower mushroom when sauted in butter. Yummy.
