Hoodia Gordonii pic
    #2916757 - 07/22/04 06:00 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

This is a pic of one of my hoodias. It's a very interesting plant. It doesn't have mescaline in it and doesn't get you high. What it does is take away people's appetite when they eat some of the plant. It's used now for weight loss. These plants go for a lot of money particularly when you find a collector. I'm working on building up my collection so I can take cuttings, root them and end up with a big garden of them. I'm offering to trade seeds if anyone wants to help this plant get established.

Hoodia gorfonii is beautiful, most of our plants are pupping now at the base. Did you grow those from seed?
Here are some older pics:

i think its original use was by hunters in africa who sometimes went a few days without eating. someone learned of these effects and figured they could make a shitload of money by selling it as a dieting tool.

I just bought one via Ebay for 20 bucks. It was about four inches. Haven't gotten it yet. Has anyone tested the claims first hand?

Nice pics, Una. Yes, my hoodia were all grown from seed. The one in the photo is 11 months old and is about 4 inches tall. They are slow growing but much faster than pedro which is considered a fast growing cactus. Mine haven't started pupping yet. I don't know if they grow faster than pedro when they are both large.

Most of the hoodia pills you see advertised are bogus. I don't plan to eat any of mine. I'm just going to build up my garden and someday have hundreds of big ones. It's worth a lot more per pound than pedro and more important than that is keeping the species going.

I know this thread is old but I thought I'd add a couple of pics I took today instead of start a new thread.

Don't you just love botanic gardens? :smile2:
