Wood loving mushrooms and grains
    #2916265 - 07/22/04 01:49 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

i wasnt sure if this should go in advanced or not...

someone i may or may not know decided to try their hand at growing some Azurescens. they plan to grow them starting with the wood envirobags from mycobag, and then to cardboard/woodchips. they and i were talking about it today and they were curious how well azuer's would take to adding some grain such as quinoa to the final substrate, before it colonized the woodchips because of quinoas supposed ability to improve the potency of mushrooms. the wood envirobags already have wheat bran in them, im told.

Any situation in which you are going to place fruiting substrate outdoors in beds for long term incubation and fruiting it is usually a good idea to NOT put grains in with it. This is the reason why many outdoor beds for wood loving species use things like cardboard or the wood based MycoBag(TM) as a spawning material (as they don't have any whole grain contents).

Critters LOVE to dig up established beds for the grains and they'll destroy months of work if you are working with a species that requires a 2-3 month dormancy period in the ground before it will begin fruiting. Just leave the grains out of the final substrate mix and you'll be fine with any outdoor project (as long as your enviornmental conditions are right).

good point about those critters... hadnt thought about them.

what if he decided to try an indoor grow? i made sure he knew that those particular ones are more difficult than other species...
