Faded/cloudy jars?
    #2916321 - 07/22/04 04:05 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

After AFOAF soaked his jars for 16hrs, they're now clouded and faded looking. He washed the jars out with soap by hand, so are they good to use? Is the bleech breaking down the jars, or is there still bleech in it and its still not safe to use?

You can do what he does, but I found just regular washing does the job of getting off the visible bigger stuck-on oatmeal type stuff, and everything else gets killed in the PC, so I never really felt that bleaching or washing the hell out of my jars made any sense since the PC kills the germs anyways.....its kinda like after killing a mosquito by slapping it, then when its dead, lighting it on fire, and then spraying raid on its ashes thinking it could be more deader...lol.

But whatever, if you have a crappy PC, or use other ways of sterilising your substrate, then maybe the extra precaution will be a good extra measure.

Everyone has different preferences, I didnt say you were wrong if thats what you thaught.
I just dont bother with the extra steps because I know that even if they DO something, its not very much because they go into very hot temps anyways.

Its a whoel different story if you have had contams real bad in a jar though. And I would probably soak in bleach for an hour and then wash it normaly. But again, its all preference. You dont HAVE to do it my way, or anybodies way. Just use common sense!
The diryier the mess, the bigger the cleanup.
Like if I spilled a glass of milk, you souldnt have to use bleach to clean that mess...but cleaning up vomit you might want to because your dealing with more contams....

Most important thing, just have fun, and troubleshoot. You might find that sometimes theres not a much work as you think...

if i just took a nice cake outta my jar, id just wash away normal like, but if i had contams, id just chuck the jar completely. why even mess around with it? i mean i got 12 more and they are only like 5 bucks

You have to remember that many commercial soaps are not antimicrobial, they are designed to carry microorganisms away when rinsed. For bar soap i use Safeguard with antimocrobial agents to wash myself, then use a bleach water/dish soap mixture to sanitize everything else.  :goodluck:

Antibacterial soaps are a scam, unless you're talking about the kinds that're actually used in hospitals and such.
