Michigan Dung Mushroom
    #2915979 - 07/22/04 02:40 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

It rained last night so I took a trip out to the cow pasture. I was unable to find any mushrooms except for slightly yellowish colored ones. They have a pretty tough cap and now as they are starting to lose moisture they are turning a pale brown color on top surrounded by a darker brown on the sides. The shape they look like is this:
. ________
(________)
I'm currently getting spore prints so I'll post those after they get done.

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
Michigan, Cow Dung

b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
Dark Brown, Attatched, Gills

c. Measurements of cap and stem.
Cap: 1 inch diameter
Stem: 1 inch long

d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
Pale Yellow and darkened vrown in some spots.

e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
Pale Brown surronded by Darker Brown. Smooth and mild wrinkles, spherical, Convex

Color:

f. Spore print color (very important!)
Still waiting for spores to drop on paper. :I

g. Color that the mushroom bruises
Didn't bruise any visible color

h. Scent of mushroom
Smell Like A Mushroom out of can but with a sweet scent.

I'll scan one as soon as it leaves a spore print.

Now that it's dry it looks like a Pan Subb. I don't think it's a Sulfur Tuft as a Sulfur Tuft is conical from my mushroom guides picture (The Audubon Society to N. American Mushrooms) and not nearly as yellow.

I also see no rings on the stem.

I'll get the spore print and a scan up ASAP. Thank you.

Looks like some kind of Agrocybe or perhaps Agaricus. Hard to say.

Either way, it's not active.

From what I've read, deadly Corts are not reported from Michigan, and they don't grow on cow poop. Neither do sulfur tufts; these grow on wood. Habitat is an important identifying characteristic that can rule out certain species when you are trying to narrow down the possibilities. Check your books for species reported to grow on dung, or compost, manured lawns, etc.

Gumby is right. Those are not active.  :frown:

That doesn't look anything like the Pan Subb out of my shroom guide. BTW, we have the same shroom guide.

There are no Psilocybe silvatica on horse or cow dung. They grow in woodchips of alder and smashed alder in logging sides and clearcuts.
