Possibly something good?
    #2915942 - 07/22/04 02:31 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I found a hay bail at work and noticed about 12 mushrooms growing out of the top and sides of it. Unfortunatly, they were all dead. I took this bail home and left it in the back yard. Every morning after a rain it produces a few mushrooms, however, i cannot seem to get up early enough to catch them alive. They have very thin stems, and are not big mushrooms. I was wondering if it would be worth waking up before daybreak to pick some of these shrooms? If so, i will tommorrow and probably post some pictures then.

If they disintegrate so quickly it is doubtful that they are any of the well-known Panaeolus or Psilocybe active mushrooms. They may be a Conocybe species. I suggest picking them and identifying them anyway. We cannot, of course, tell what your mushroom is by your description. Panaeolus subbalteatus would be the most common hay-inhabiting active mushroom that you would be looking for.

Good luck.

Another possiblity is that they are Coprinus mushrooms... Which are inactive.

if they turn to blackish muck and have a white stem theyre probably coprinus, ive found a lot of them on hay bails in my area
