Using only one fan, what if I took two pieces of PVC pipe and ran one down from the fan and one out to a hole in the lid with one of those discs so that the air would be pushed from the bottom of the tank and blown out from the bottom of the tank.

I don't really like that idea. For one thing...if you are using a 10 gallon aquarium tank....as I assume you are. A 3" PVC pipe is going to eat up ALOT of valuable real estate. I would recommend either 2 computer fans on top or a single aquarium pump. The aquarium pump is the easiest and cheapest solution since it only requires drilling a 3/4" hole in the lid to run the vinyl tube in. And a single pump to run 1 tank costs $6-7. Even 1 computer fan will cost $16. But if you are like me, no matter what anyone says you won't just take their word for it. You will built one of each setup and compare each on ease to build, cost to build, and effectiveness.

BTW, the other advantage to using an aquarium air pump over a computer fan is that you can put an air stone on the end of the vinyl tube providing the air and sit it in a class of water at the bottom of your tank to provide both air and humidity. Of course it isn't absoulutely necessary with proper perlite humidification but it is nice. Since excess fanning also drys out the air, it is nice to have a fanning method that puts moisture back into the air. You have to be careful with the computer fans because they can dry the air out and you don't have the ability to use them to put moisture back in.

Oh yeah and another thing: People were worried that a fan would 'dry' the air out too much/lower humidity. Thing is, with an efficient terrarium with perlite, fan and timer and temp., set on the right cycle, although the RH will decrease (just as when you manually fan) the RH will quickly come right back up in a few minutes.

"Whatever method you choose, do the math. Both the fans and the air pumps tell you how much air volume they move per minute, and you know the volume of your terrarium so do the math and make sure that you will have at least 2 complete air exchanges per hour."
How would you apply this formula? For example if your fan/pump comes on once every 12 hours it should be going for 24 exchanges worth of time?

well....this is exactly why your fan/pump should not come on every 12 hours. If you read Stamets book you will find that most mushrooms require 1.5 complete air exchanges per hour. So you can either run a fan/pump constantly that will provide 1.5 complete exchanges per hour. Or if you have a fan/pump that is more powerful than that then you will have to calculate how long it will take your fan to provide 1.5 complete air exchanges and set your timer to run the fan/pump for exactly that length of time once every hour.
