    #2914075 - 07/22/04 12:09 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

is it possible to grow shitakes or portabellas on the basic PF vermiculite and BRF substrate, or does the substrate lack nutrients to grow these specific mushrooms

anything is appreciated
thx

Probably better off using WBS or corn...It really depends on what kind of edible you want

I've got some gnarly oysters growing invitro on white millet right now. I'm too busy too spawn it and it's looking kinda cool anyways, they look nothing like oysters should, or any mushroom for that matter.
Peace

The standard PF recipe will really only support the fruiting of oyster mushrooms, but the mushroom produced will be weak and nothing like traditionally grown oysters. There just isn't enough nutrient in standard rice flour and vermiculite substrates to support good edible fruiting.

However, Oyster Mushrooms will product nicely from soaked toilet paper rolls, cut up and pastuerized newspapers, ect.

I have yet to see a shiitake grown from the PF recipe, although I do know that shiitake will fruit directly from cased grains (millet based mixtures). Growing Ports or Agaricus bisporus is a no go on this substrate, it needs compost and a living casing layer.

I am not being argumentative here but I have grown various mushrooms using PF formula including oysters. I did find that most of them benefited from more air exchange than traditional PF methods but they grew fine.

I also think flavor suffers in many types without wood products in the substrate.
