discipline from the army
    #2913110 - 07/21/04 07:14 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I was thinking about that part in Fahrenheit 911 where the marine recruiters tell the black kid that he's gonna need discipline to go into music...implying that the army makes their graduates disciplined people. I know that's a big part of the pitch the armed services give to recruits. That seems kind of strange though; isn't it true if you don't do what they tell you to do they kick your ass or expel you and stuff like that. I mean, ok the alarm goes off at 5 am and everyone jumps out of bed, that's good and all but is that the same sort of discipline that a farmer has who gets out of bed at 5 am on his own even though it wouldn't be that much of a big deal to sleep in another couple hours. It seems to me like this is more like being disciplined in the old fashioned sense than gaining self-discipline. Maybe it's a different thing, maybe not.

I was in the Army, and I did learn much about self discipline. I needed someone to kick my ass and make me understand that I was not the center of the universe. I also learned how to physically push myself beyond my percieved limits. This is a very empowering and confidence building thing. There were also negatives, but these things were not.

we live in a world where people dont need to push themselves in the same ways as they used to.
there is less physical satisfaction in that way.
the army does force you to realize your own physical potential.

however its much more enjoyable other ways.

Without being forced I would have been much too lazy to realize this on my own. At the time I just thought I was being harrassed, but this ability has stood me in good stead on a couple of occasions.

While you do learn discipline in the army you will forget it when you leave. Im a lazy bastard but i had no problems at all adjusting to millitary life. A week after service i was the same old me again, not making my bed and sleeping late.
