Fruiting chamber ventilation
    #2912028 - 07/21/04 11:07 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

My friend plans on putting her fruiting chamber in her basement which is extremely dusty.

She wants to avoid contams at all costs (obviously). She plans on using a computer fan for ventilation.

What type of material will filter most of the dust and crud out of the input air. She was thinking of using either furnace filter, doubled coffee filters, or a huge sheet of tyvek (like the area of one side of the container).

Cut up furnace filters will probably be your best bet, but you'll avoid the most dust by not being down in the basement often to stir it up.

I'd also suggest taking a look at those fiber replacement filters for fish tank water filters (the kind you dump new charcoal in and sit on the backside of the tank). Those are about the right size to put on the a computer fan and they'd filter out most of the big stuff (and they would be cheap/easy to replace).

Drill holes in strategic areas on your fruiting chamber about 3/8" in diameter, then tape small tyvek squares over them, works very well.

A few more questions:

1. What do you think is better, air forced into the chamber or air being pulled out?

2. In her martha type greenhouse, there is no bottom plastic, the chamber is exposed to the floor. She was considering finding a furnace filter apprx the same dimensions and securing it to the bottom for ventilation. She would then hook up a comp fan near the top to pull air in from the bottom. Does this sound about right? Perhaps a sheet of tyvek taped to the bottom?

3. She has considered using tyvek for ventilation, but she was worried it wouldn't allow enough penetration to compensate for the air being pulled out. She didn't think creating a partial vacuum would be a good idea (sucking in contams when she opens tha door).

i know that for Pot plants it is better to have air sucked out, but thats mostly for the heat. I also know that air always finds its way in so i would say Forced out.

Can a computer fan be used, Melted into the Side or something? And If it can, Then is the tyvek placed outside the fan on the outside of the chamber or Behind it, in the chamber. i would think inside?

Air exchange can be "passive" and still be effective for most mushrooms species. Only high air exchange species, like most Oyster mushrooms require constant air flow and exchange. Cutting holes and taping over filters or stuffing the holes with polyfil will allow gas to passively exchange constantly in your chamber. Forcing air in, or sucking it out with a fan on a timer is also recommended at least 2-3 times a day if you cannot get to manually fanning the chamber.

Remember it is CO2 that you are are attempting to evacuate from the chamber to replace with fresh air. CO2 is heavier than O2, so you'll want a method for C02 to "vent" out near the bottom of the chamber (hence the open bottoms of things like the "Martha" chamber and other stand up indoor greenhouses). If using a tub-like device simply make sure that you drill your vent holes near the bottom so C02 that settles in and around your substrate level has a way to evacute.
