Rice as a Substrate

Is it possible to use rice and rice only as a substrate when using cakes? My friend wants to do this but I haven't seen documentation on it and am not sure if it would work. He says he read on the internet somewhere that it would work.



Why does he want to do this? So he can eat the cake when he's done.

i dont know if the grounded rice flour would work alone. im pretty sure the vermiculite is added in order to help with water retention to give the mycelium something to feed off. correct me if i am wrong but my friend hasnt messed with cakes in awhile. why not just buy the verm?

Not rice flour, but actual rice.




He doesn't want verm becuase he wouldn't be able to eat the cakes. I'll tell him about the verm water thing, thanks


EDIT: he just mentioned "sphagnum moss" to me. Would this affect the cakes in any way as to shroom output?


Also, today is my one year anniversary of joining the shroomery!

Yes, but rice by itself has a tendancy to "stick" to itself and is very difficult to shake. If it is too wet it can be difficult for mycelium to penetrate and colonize quickly.

Some people will add a table spoon of gypsum or some other type of buffer to keep the rice from sticking together too much. Even adding in a small amount of vermiculite will help.

rice by itself will colonize much faster than the flour in jars, but it not suitable for cakes, they contaminate way too fast and easily. they also contaminate easily inside the jars, without the use of a pressure cooker. whole grain rice should be cased. Other than contamination rates, whole grain rice is a great method. i think this is due to the increase in nutrients..

The friend plans on fully colonizing a rice cake, then putting it on top of sphagnum moss and exposing it to light. Will the mycelium spread to the moss, making more areas for the cake to fruit?

I thought that when light starts to get to it, the cake would start concentrating on producing fruits more than spreading myc.

I have always used whole grain rice and it works great. Just make sure to have a ratio of rice:verm of around 2:1. They do fine on any type of casing.

i cooked the rice before i did straight-grain-rice jars. never done it with verm before

Perhaps I should give it a try.. Grinding rice with a stick blender is time-consuming. :smile:

Yes it can. I while back I expiramented with the quart jar revisited tek, it worked but a there were contam issues. You have to get the water to rice ratio perfect to keep the rice from becoming too mushy. which means compensating for condensation during and after sterilization. I did it both ways with starting with raw rice and steaming it in the jar and using already cooked rice mixed with verm and packing into jars. the latter worked better but the former had less contam issues, i guess if you keep it clean it shouldn't be a problem but keep in mind that you can't overcook the rice one bit before packing it into the jars. it'll take some test trials before you get the right ratios.
