Are you planning on a Socket 478 or Socket 775 Pentium 4?

Script, there are various 3.2 ghz one, goto newegg.com and find out what Socket it is for.

I would recommend the 3.2c, which takes a socket 478 motherboard. Just stick to ASUS, Gigabyte, or MSI and you should be fine. There are others but I dont really know how reliable the others are. At newegg you can specifiy what type you need to find the one right for you.

Also, for a heatsink, I recommend the thermalright sp-94, however, you really should research this a bit more or find somebody that can show you what to do.

Um.......the 3.2ghz one.

Could you give me a brief difference definition?

If you don't know the difference, then you probably have the Socket 478. Socket 775 is the new socket which supports DDR2 and PCI-E. Socket 775 is also sans pins. The reason I asked you what 3.2 you owned was because there is a 3.2 GHz for socket 478 and 775. In fact the Socket 775 P4's start at 2.8, although I suspect that they all may be Prescott core.

www.asustek.com . The flagship Intel P4 Socket 478 motherboard is the P4C800 series. If you want overclocking performance on a budget, try the P4P800 series. I have a P4P800 Deluxe, which cost me $125 back in March (probably costs less by now), which I can overclock my Intel Pentium 4 3.0C to 240FSB (3.6 GHz), but I can also overclock it to 3.8GHz with my new RAM, but I have due to heat production reasons.

Gigabyte is also a good company. Since you have a 3.2, I suspect that money isn't an issue to you. Go with the Asus P4C800 series then, it will have everything you want and more.

If you want the best bang for your buck, search for what you want on www.froogle.com and then cross-reference the vendor at www.resellerratings.com . Make sure you actually read the comments because some of them may be fraudulent. One of my favorite quotes:

If you paid retail, you paid too much. :alert:

Unless you are in a multiuser environment (lots of people running applications on your machine, such as a server), or creating a RAID array, SCSI is a waste of money. I used to be a die hard SCSI person, but those crappy IDE drives have gotten much much better in the last five years. For a desktop machine, save your money and go with IDE...

In answer to your question... yes, adding SCSI card will provide the same benefits as an integrated SCSI channel on the MB. Most integrated SCSI controllers still go through the PCI bus.

Ugh, I'm going to send hitmen to kill you suess..

There is a huge noticable difference when running a 7200RPM vs 10000 or 15000 RPM drive.

they also last a LOT LONGER before failure. IDE is made 'as cheap as possible' so it can compete on a poor user market. SCSI is designed and made to last a long time beacuse companies pay big bucks for it.

SCSI is superior and its ONLY bad point is cost. If you have the cash to buy a nice 15000 rpm drive and an ultra160 or 320 controller, do it.

just go with SATA, if you really want to feel like your HD is amoung the best. Right now the top end IDE's are fast enough that a Raid-0, scis, or sata config will not feel any faster.

script, I didnt know there were any intel cpu's for over $1000. Dont get the extreme edition, unless your a die hard who wants the little extra edge that is offered right now. Stick to the 3.2 northwood/prescott (prescott if you dont mind it running a bit hotter), or get the 3.4 northwood, which goes for around $400 on newegg.com.

Stick away from lga 775, the best bang for your buck is still the 3.0 or 3.2 northwood/prescott chips.

script:  Supermicro mobos are GREAT, and a lot of them have onboard scsi and ide... but they are a bit more expensive then other boards usualy.

I have a X5DAL-TG2 with a  ZCR Card for my dual 2.66ghz Xeons... works like a charm

EDIT: I think  This mobo might be close to what your looking for

I would stay away from that mboard, 2 old pci slots and 2 new ones. Im sure you can find something with a bit more ability to add anything to it. I would be screwed if i only had 2 pci slots.

OK, I'm not going to read your entire post right now, script, but just looking at what you are going to buy, I can already pick out a few no-no's.

1) Expensive system... and skimp on the case? No.
2) Expensive CPU, and skimp on the motherboard? No. If you're going ASUS, get a P4P800 AT LEAST. Then you can fully utilize your 3.2.
3) 3.2E. E means Prescott. Prescott means VERY HOT. Prescotts use 100+ watts. Thats a big NO. Get a P4 Northwood core.

Everything else looks fine. www.thermalright.com and get the XP120. Zalman just ain't gonna tame a Prescott.

I'll answer the other questions later. PM me with your IM service screen name and I'll contact you for further analysis. Good luck.

defaintely stay away from sis chipsets. Ugh, garbage. Best to spend more money and get a ncier board with a nice intel chipset on it for that intel processor. VIA and SIS suck.

Second, you should look into getting an ultra320 card, or at least a 64 bit PCI ultra 160 card, as normal PCI is limited to 133MB/sec, yet ultra 160 is 160MB/sec.

64 bit cards ARE backwards compatible. But if you buy a nice 64 bit now, and dont have a 64 bit slot on your board, you will by the time you upgrade again. Then you dont have to buy a new controller.

Script, get the Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste, I gurantee most people with their nice heatsinks dont put on the nice paste.

Im running a 3.0c with the sp 94, my temps run 19? idle!!! and maxes out at 34? idle!!

Thats absolutly amazing, I also put on a 90mm fan that blows at 82cfm, which really makes the difference.

This one is great but you'll have to go with AMD 64, which is also great

Prescott has bigger L2 cache but much slower and hotter... not worth it.

Get a lian-li case. Lian-Li is known for high quality cases that are not flashy and extremely moddable.

www.heatsinkfactory.com has the ThermalRight XP-120 for sale for $50 pre-order. You'll need a 120mm fan to go with it.

I can't answer all these questions right now but I'd rather you PM me for help rather than the other way around. Good luck.
